I think this was supposed to be an earlier section of mage vs guard and I never used it. Don't remember why, but it works as sort of a drabbley thing set earlier in the timeline? And I can now move it out of my 'unfinished things' folder.
Mage vs. Guard Drabble 8
"You're lucky you got him stabilized as fast as you did."
"I'm lucky I got him out of there. We got separated at the door- it was sheer luck I found him when I did."
Duo wondered who was talking. And why couldn't he see them? Everything was dark...
"His wounds are extensive. What the hell was he fighting?" That sounded like Sally.
A deep sigh. Only Heero sighed like that and only when he was really upset. Duo wondered why he was upset- what had happened?
"The damn mage created a hydra-warrior."
"Crap. So every time he killed one- two came back-"
Memory came rushing in and Duo suppressed a shiver. That had been bad- he'd figured it out right away but-
"Exactly- and I'm sure he figured it out, but what could he do? He was in a sealed room- it looked like he tried his explosives to get out-"
"That would account for the burns..."
"I never should've let him out of my sight."
A small chuckle. "Heero- he's your guard. He's supposed to protect you."
"He ended up in a trap meant for me. I'm sure that's why I was able to surprise the bastard- he was so sure he'd caught me that he didn't even have his shields up." Heero snorted and Duo felt a soft brush of fingers against his cheek. "I spent way too much time interrogating him..."
"You didn't know he'd caught Duo."
"I should've known. I should've put an alert in the protections I gave him- but we were so rushed..."
"You need to build him permanent ones. Stop fighting it Heero. The guy has been your guard for how long now? You aren't going to scare him away at this point."
"He'd be safer with someone else."
"He wouldn't want to be with anyone else, idiot." There was a smacking sound and Duo hoped that Sally had hit Heero upside the head. If not- once he managed to get his eyes open- he was going to do it. "Besides, you're the only mage who will put up with him."
"He's not that bad!"
"Heero, you were ready to kill him that first week or so." Sally laughed. "Look, I have other patients to deal with- I have to get back to the infirmary. He should wake up soon- I fixed all the damage I could find. Make sure he rests."
"I'll try."
Duo heard the door close and made a sincere effort to open his eyes. It was really tiring. There was that soft brush on his cheek again. He managed to turn his head towards it, seeking the reassurance of touch. Trapped in that room, he'd had no idea what had happened to Heero. Had the mage been injured?
"Awake?"
Duo managed to lift his eyelids a bit and nod.
"You need to rest."
His mouth was dry, but he managed to croak: "You okay?"
The mage sounded amused. "Better than you."
Damn it! Duo forced his eyelids open. Heero was leaning over him, frowning. Duo ignored the frown- it was Heero's usual expression. "Where hurt?"
"I'm not hurt." Heero's fingers were cool against his skin. "I'm fine. You're the one that nearly died this time." He slipped an arm under Duo's shoulders and lifted him up, pressing a cup of water against Duo's lips. "Drink. Sally healed all your injuries, but you need to rest." The water soothed his throat and Duo sighed in relief.
"Thank you," he said as Heero eased him back against the pillows.
Heero bent his head slightly. "Thank you. You managed to distract the mage. He thought he caught me in that trap."
"Got him though?" He had heard that part, right?
"Of course." Heero's lips curved in a faint smile.
"Good."
"Now that all your questions are answered, you need to sleep. Remember?"
"But you-"
"Relax. I'm going to be right here. It's my turn to stand guard." Heero tapped Duo's cheek gently. "Okay?"
"Okay," Duo agreed and closed his eyes.
