Mage vs. Guard Drabble 3
Heero eyed the box on his worktable. "What is this?"
"A present," his guard grinned at him.
"Why did you give me a present?"
Duo shook his head. "Oh, it's not from me, it's from Master Quatre."
Heero took a step back. "I thought you said everything went fine at the conference."
"It did." Duo smiled wider. "He said it was a gift to thank me for my hard work."
"Then why is it on my worktable?"
Duo moved close. "Well, you see, at the conference Master Quatre and Master Trowa were demonstrating a lot of magical things."
"I know that. That's why they wanted you along-"
"Takes a thief to catch a thief," Duo nodded. "And I'm glad they did, cause some of the other ones Wufei sent were hopeless. They kept getting distracted by the demonstration."
Heero frowned. "They've seen magic before."
Duo just shrugged. "Well, they sure seemed like they hadn't. Anyway, I did catch a few lightfingers and so Master Quatre gave me that as a thank you."
"And again, why is it on my worktable?"
"If you look at it, you'll know why."
Heero gave Duo a suspicious look, but curiosity won out. He opened the box up and reached inside, pulling the object inside out into the light.
Promptly dropping it on the table, he took several steps backward-right into Duo's arms. "He gave you that?!"
"Yes."
"They're illegal!"
"Not exactly," Duo grinned. "Just not recommended for non-mage use."
"You aren't a mage."
"But you are," it was practically a purr.
"I'm not putting that anywhere near me."
"But you can put it near me..." Duo pointed out.
"I somehow knew you were going to say that." Heero hid a smile and picked up the object. "All right, but if something goes wrong, it is so not my fault..."
Duo laughed. "I know. I signed the waiver remember?"
"I don't think the waiver covers this..."
