Une entered the waiting room quietly and studied the young man standing by the window. His head was bent, his forehead resting on the glass, his bangs shading his face.
"Agent," she said and he turned to look at her, the bleak despair on his face making her pause. "Want to tell me what happened?"
He sighed. "I messed up."
"I need a little more than that."
Shrugging, he turned back towards the window. "I assaulted my partner without provocation. I'm sure that's a firing offense."
Une closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep mental breath before trying another tactic. "How is he?"
"I don't have a fucking clue. No one will tell me anything and I can't get Sally to come out and talk to me." He sent a look in her direction, almost pleading. "Do you know more? Can you find out?"
"I already asked the desk to let Po know I was here. I'm sure someone will tell us something soon. I'm sure if it was very bad, we'd already know-"
The faint noise he made spurred her to cross the room, to lay a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Please," she tried again. "Tell me what happened? You'd just arrived back this morning-"
"I was in the office." His voice was weary as if he'd been retelling the scene over and over- and maybe he had been if only to himself. "I... didn't hear him. I... I think I had dozed off a little, waiting for the reports to print and all of a sudden- I- knew I wasn't alone- someone was leaning over me- and I- didn't know it was him! I swear I didn't! I just- reacted...." Wrapping his arms around himself, he murmured: "I didn't mean to do it- I didn't!- and all of a sudden he was on the ground and the blood-"
Une squeezed his shoulder reassuringly. "I understand. You'd been undercover all week-" Guilt welled up. She shouldn't have insisted that he report in this morning. She should have given him time to rest, to come down from that constant on guard mentality that the undercover agents had to use.
"I didn't mean it," he said again, his voice cracking just a little.
Before Une could say anything, the door opened and Sally Po was nodding towards the inner room. "You can come in and see him now..."
"Is he okay?" His partner demanded and Sally smiled.
"Come in and ask him yourself," she said and shared a smile with Une as he dashed past her.
Une made it to the door in time to hear:
"Idiot. It wasn't your fault."
"But I..."
"Shut up, Duo. It wasn't your fault." Yuy's glare wasn't quite as effective since one of his eyes was covered with one of the bright orange medical cold packs, but he still managed. "I should have thought before I tried to wake you up. It's my fault-"
"But I hit you- and then you fell- and the desk-"
"I'm fine."
"But- you were bleeding-"
"He really is fine," Sally interjected. "It wasn't a bad cut. We just butterflied it closed- didn't even stitch it."
Une watched as Yuy heaved a sigh and turned his head just enough so that his partner could see the bandage on his temple. "See?" He said, his voice surprisingly gentle. "No big deal."
Maxwell sat abruptly down on the stool beside the table, relief flooding his expression. "I'm still sorry-"
"I know, but it's okay." Yuy cast a glance in Une's direction. "You really need to go home and rest, Duo. I'm sure the debriefing can wait a bit."
Une nodded in answer to the hinted question. "You already gave us what we need for now."
"You can drive Yuy home," Sally suggested. "He needs a little rest too."
Une didn't expect Yuy to argue- he could be a terrible patient- but in this case she thought he'd be only too willing to agree.
He was. "That sounds like a good idea," Yuy lifted himself up and before he could put a foot on the floor, Maxwell had already gotten to his feet and was waiting to support his partner.
Une hid a smile as Yuy accepted the help and let Maxwell lead him out of the room. Sally grinned at her as the door closed behind them.
"Nicely done."
Une let her smile fade a little. "It shouldn't have gotten that far- I should have made Maxwell go home as soon as he came in this morning-"
"Hindsight is always best," Sally soothed. "Besides, you know damn well Maxwell wouldn't have gone home until everything was done otherwise-"
"And Yuy wouldn't have either-"
"Stubborn idiots."
"But they take care of each other."
Sally laughed. "Thank all the gods, because no one else would dare try...."
