I could smell it in the air as I left work and headed out for my car. That wet green smell that means that for a few brief weeks, flowers would start blooming, the trees would start to show green again, and my driveway would be a muddy mess because the county still hadn't fixed the road.
Still, it was nice to drive home with the windows down for the first time in months. There were still snow patches here and there, but now they were mostly puddles or wet spots, and soon wouldn't be anything more than a memory.
I turned onto the road that led to my house, grateful for the four wheel drive on my truck and making note of where I'd have to add a little gravel. Maybe another letter to the county?
I shouldn't have been surprised to see the figure on my doorstep. He always arrived with the spring- always stayed through summer- always left me when it started to get cold.
I swung out of the truck and was greeted with his bright smile. "Heero! There you are!"
"You haven't been waiting long?" I asked him. "You know where the key is-"
His smile widened a little. "I don't need keys. I was just enjoying the day- thinking about the yard."
I leaned into his hug, felt his warmth against my cheek and nodded. "I saved some ads for you and marked a few websites. Though we did pretty well last year."
"We did." He followed me up the steps, waited while I opened the door. I didn't ask where he'd been, didn't ask how long he was staying. I knew better. He followed me into the house, hung his coat beside mine, lined his boots up neatly on the floor.
It was good to have him back.
"So, how are things with you?" He asked as he followed me into the kitchen.
"Same old, same old," I shrugged as I opened the fridge and took out my water pitcher. "How are things with you?"
Opening my cupboard he pulled down two glasses. "I'm... I don't know. I'm feeling restless. I think I need a change."
Restless? But he'd just gotten here!
I poured the water into the glasses and bent my face so that my bangs hid the dismay I'm sure he'd see on my face. "Oh? What are you thinking about changing?"
He didn't answer right away. In fact, he was quiet so long that I dared a glance at him. He stood, turning the glass round and round between his hands, looking at me.
"I was thinking... I was wondering if you'd mind... if this year..."
He wasn't going to stay. He was going to leave. My stomach twisted and I found it hard to breathe.
"Yes?" I prompted when he fell silent.
"I want to stay," he burst out and I gaped at him in surprise. "That is- if you don't mind- I quit my job. I thought I might try to get one here? If you don't mind-"
"I don't mind," I said, but he didn't seem to hear me.
"I mean, the Sweepers have been great and all, but it's not a life I want to lead forever. I want to be steady- I want to stay in one place-"
"You can stay here." I tried again and this time it registered.
"I can?" His smile made my heart speed up. "You mean it? I can stay? You're sure?"
"Idiot," I told him. "I've always wanted you to stay."
