This wasn't a request- it's just a little thing that popped into my head as I was driving home last week.

Drabble 42

Blinking at the short outburst of profanity from the kitchen, I put down my newsreader and cautiously poked my head around the corner. My room mate was giving our coffee maker a look that made me glad he wasn't yet armed for the day.

"Problems?" I asked carefully and his glare moved to me.

"Why did we buy this fucking device?" He demanded and I hid a smile.

"We didn't. Quatre gave it to us remember? Cause he didn't like the sludge our old one produced?" The growl I got in response made me blink again. "Uh... I'm sure Quatre didn't mean to make things more complicated."

"You know damn well that Winner loves to make things complicated." Heero leaned back against the counter with a snort.

I moved into the kitchen, placing myself between Heero and the coffee machine. Hey, it wasn't the smartest place to be, but I needed my caffeine, you know? Without our machine I'd have to risk the stuff at HQ. I twisted a few knobs, closed the top and hit a button. The machine made a reassuring gurgling sound, so I glanced over at Heero to see if he'd calmed down.

He was still frowning. Well, it had been a faint hope that it was just the coffee maker that had put him in a bad mood. It usually took more than that to really piss Heero off.

I studied him for a moment. I admit it, Heero is a tough read, but I'd like to think I've figured him out a little bit over the last few years. "How did that security meeting for the colony talks go yesterday?" I asked as the mug filled with coffee. Heero had met with Quatre and a few others to talk over some of the issues that had already come up- had Quatre irritated him somehow? Heero had seemed a little more upset over Quatre's name than a lack of coffee warranted.

The look I got in response told me I'd hit a nerve. "It went fine- until the end."

"What happened at the end?"

Another growl, something about Quatre meddling in things he shouldn't be, was all I got in response. Heero leaned past me, snatched the now full coffee cup and stalked out of the room. "We're going to be late if we don't leave now," he snapped over his shoulder and I sighed as I turned the coffee maker off. Guess I didn't get my cup this morning- not that it really mattered. Now I was curious... and that's usually a better pick me up than any cup of coffee.

There was only one thing to do.

At lunch, once Heero was safely out of the office, I called Quatre.

"Duo!" He greeted me with a grin that told me he was up to something. Quatre runs a huge company, messes in sphere politics and yet still apparently doesn't have enough sneaky stuff to keep him occupied. Really, he needs a hobby. Maybe more than one.

"Quatre- do you have a minute?"

"Course I do- I was just about to call you, as a matter of fact. I need to talk to you about Heero."

Ah ha.

"This wouldn't have anything to do with the reason Heero is growling if your name so much as comes up in casual conversation, does it?"

Quatre looked smug. "He's growling, hm?"

"Worse. If he'd been armed, our coffee maker would have gone to that big appliance store in the sky this morning- and that was before we got here. I'm not even going to tell you what he did to the rookies we're training. What did you do to set him off?"

"I just had a little heart to heart chat with him."

I raised my eyebrows. "Oh? About what exactly?"

"About how he needs to start sharing his feelings with others."

That made me blink. "So now he's growling at everyone. I'm not sure I really like Heero sharing those feelings with others. I mean, I'm used to him, but he made a rookie cry this morning-"

"No. No. No. Not those feelings. I told him that he needed to start dating."

Dating? Heero? Choking, I waved a hand at the monitor. "Are you insane?" I managed. "Dating? Dating who?"

"Well, I do have a few eligible sisters..."

"You're setting him up with one of your sisters?" What had they done to deserve that? Tried to stage a takeover of Quatre's company?

Quatre sighed. "Well, no. He sort of refused to even try a date with one."

I was obscurely relieved. "Sort of refused?"

"Threatened to kill me if I tried," Quatre admitted and I snorted.

"That's more than sort of-"

"Whatever. Anyway, I said if he didn't like blondes, I knew a few dark haired young ladies-"

"And he said?"

"He wasn't interested in dating females."

My jaw hit the desk. "What?"

Quatre looked amused. "You heard me. So I asked if he'd be interested in one of the Magunacs- there are a few-"

"You didn't!" I dropped my head into my hands and groaned. "Seriously? I can't see him being interested in dating anyone, Quat-"

"Oh, he's interested."

That made me look up. "He agreed to go out with one of them?"

Quatre nodded. "Oh yes."

Why was I upset? Why did I care who Heero went out with? "So- which one? When?"

"When? I believe his answer was 'when hell freezes over'."

That weird feeling of relief swept over me again. "See? I told you-"

"He's after someone else, Duo."

"You know, the way you say that makes it sound as if he's hunting some criminal down-"

"Well, this is Heero, after all." Quatre smiled. "Though I wouldn't use the term 'hunting down'. In fact, from what I could get out of him, it's someone he's wanted for quite some time- he just hasn't been able to do anything about it yet."

"Really?" I was surprised. Usually Heero went after things he wanted with a single minded intensity- be it a criminal we were looking for or one of the items on our grocery list.

"Really. So I told him, that I'd-" the office door flew open, hitting the wall with a bang and making me jump. Heero stood there, eyes narrowed as he took in the sight of me talking to Quatre.

"I knew it," he growled and stalked over to the desk. He pointed his finger at Quatre. "You were supposed to stay out of it!"

"Duo called me," Quatre answered, undaunted. Course, he was quite a distance away. Heero turned on me and I tried to give him a reassuring smile.

"Heero, relax. It's okay- no big deal-"

"No big deal?" He repeated, looking startled. A moment later and his hand was wrapped around my tie and he'd hauled me up to face him- nose to nose.

Oops. Guess that had been the wrong choice of words.

"Heero- I-"

Before I could finish, he yanked me forward and pressed his mouth to mine.

Oh....

I sagged back against my desk when he let me go, gaping at him. He cast a final glare at Quatre and stalked out of the room.

"Ahem," Quatre said as I tried to convince my brain to work again. "This is where you go and chase after him."

"I do?"

He nodded. "Yes. Chase him down- I bet he headed for the gym- and take him home. I'll call you in a few days."

Chase him down. Take him home. Home. Oh!

"Got it," I said and ran out the door.
