Two Flirting Doves Part 7

They came to a stop outside of Duo's apartment door. There was work the next morning, so this was the end of their evening together. Duo kept Heero waiting patiently while he fidgeted with his keys and finally opened his door. He took a step inside. "Good night," he said, a bit oddly.

"Good night," Heero answered.

Duo looked at him for a couple of seconds, then leaned in real quick, planted a swift peck on Heero's cheek, and withdrew with equal speed, slamming his door in the process.

Heero blinked at the door suddenly not very far from his face and took a reflexive step backward. He pondered its surface for a good half minute before knocking on it.

Duo had not strayed far from the door. In fact, he'd been nearly pressed up against it, peering through the peephole, trying to gauge Heero's reaction. After a fortifying breath, he cracked the door open. "Yes?"

"I don't appreciate having the door slammed in my face." Heero's expression was inscrutable.

"Oh. Uh. Sorry."

A brief silence. "Well?"

"Uh." Duo racked his brain, trying to think of what came next, what Heero's expectation was waiting for. "Do-over...?"

A slight twitch of Heero's head agreed.

Duo opened the door back up to something resembling normal. "Um. Good night?"

"Good night," Heero answered calmly, with an equally calm kiss to Duo's cheek. "I'll see you tomorrow." With one last smile, he took off down the hall.

"Uh. Yeah." This time, Duo wasn't about to shut the door until Heero disappeared from sight. And right before Heero turned the corner, he glanced back and nodded, and Duo gave him a little wave in response. And after Heero was truly gone, Duo shut the door gently this time, and leaned against it again, and instead of holding his breath, he released it in a long, happy sigh.
