Two Flirting Doves Part 6

"...And now to our final contestant, Duo Maxwell. He was in first place coming in to Final Jeopardy, and he is still in first place after two correct answers from his opponents. He didn't have to bet anything to keep his lead and take home fifty thousand dollars, plus his total here after this round, for the charity of his choice."

"I expected him to do well," Wufei murmured to Heero beside him. They were sitting in the studio audience of tonight's charity game of Jeopardy: Peacekeepers edition. "But not this well."

Heero leaned in to whisper back. "After you add his competitive nature to free money for a good cause, this really shouldn't have been a surprise."

"Hm. Perhaps."

"...So let's see if our Preventers representative came up with the correct question to tonight's answer!"

The question appeared on the big screen for the audience to read.

The host stared.

Heero glanced over to Duo, who stood there with a bland expression on his face.

On Heero's other side, Trowa snickered.

Wufei brought fingers up to his forehead.

The host recovered. "Ah. No, I'm afraid 'Will you go out with me?' was not the question we were looking for. Uh, let's see how much Duo bet."

The bottom half of the screen was revealed. It said zero dollars, with an asterisk referring to a footnote scribbled further down. It was crammed in there and the screen barely had the resolution to show it legibly, but it read: 'I'd have been willing to bet like $11111 on this, except, well, you know :)'

The host managed to carry on with announcing Duo as the official winner of tonight's game.

Trowa had trouble suppressing his chuckle.

Heero elbowed him. "This is your fault. You told him to be creative and spontaneous about asking me out."

"Good advice, wasn't it?"

"I'd have preferred something without an audience."

"At least he didn't write your name up there," Wufei pointed out.

"That question is directed at me, right?"

Wufei snorted. "I don't think all those ones were an accident, Yuy."

"Just checking," he muttered defensively.

While making obligatory small talk up on stage to make useful footage for the credits reel, Duo pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked the incoming message. "Yes. Idiot." it read. He put it back in his pocket with a smug smile and kept up the banal chatter.

OWARI

* for the record, going in to final jeopardy, 2nd place had $x and duo had $2x + 200 or something, because there's no way he'd have sacrificed extra money for his charity just so he could ask heero out like this. he'll probably donate the extra $199 to the charity out of pocket to make up for it.
