Notes: Not beta-read. This is a part of the babysiting adventures universe, inspired by Sharon's prompt "Babysitting adventures for uncles Heero, Duo, Trowa and Quatre. Wufei and Relena are the parents, of course". I should state now that the little drabbles in this universe will not be chronological at all!
Worth it
Leila squealed as Trowa lifted her up, tossing her into the air and catching her, only to swing her around and around. Without any fear, she spread her arms out, laughing at the game.
"She's a little daredevil," Quatre said to Wufei. They were sitting on Quatre's estate grounds, having a little picnic, and his staff were just laying out the last of the food.
"She can trust Trowa without any fear," Wufei said, looking towards his daughter. He smiled when she was snatched from the air from Duo, who pulled her down for a kiss and proceeded to tickle her.
"Uncle Duo!" she cried out, laughing and squirming. "Uncle Trowa, help!"
It was Heero that rescued her, swinging her onto his back and protecting her from Duo's grabbing hands. She made faces at him.
Relena leaned against Wufei, and he easily accepted her weight against him. "Don't let him fool you, Quatre, Wufei's watching her very carefully."
"As any father would," Quatre replied. "Or in this case, as any of us would."
Pretending to be defeated, Heero set her down and Leila ran towards the picnic blanket.
"Baba!" she squealed, running around him to throw her short arms around his neck. He could feel her small heart beating through her chest and against his back, hear her panting as she tried to catch her breath. Duo pretended to laugh evilly, rubbing his hands together.
"The little Princess Leila is mine to lock away in a tower!"
She stopped laughing then, distracted, then reached a hand over to Relena's shoulder. "Baba, what's that?"
Wufei's gaze followed her pointing finger. "A caterpillar," he replied.
Relena froze. "What?"
Before Wufei could remove the furry insect from his wife, Leila had reached out to prod it. It curled immediately into a ball and rolled off of Relena and onto the picnic blanket; Relena immediately moved away.
"What's a caterpillar?" Leila asked.
"It's what comes before a butterfly," Wufei answered. "It becomes a cocoon and inside it, this caterpillar grows and grows until it becomes a butterfly."
"Butterflies are pretty!" Leila exclaimed. "When will it become one? Now?"
"No, not now," Wufei said with a smile.
"Oh." His answer proved boring to Leila, and she went up to Duo, holding her arms out. "Uncle Duo," she sang. "Pick me up. I want to fly!"
"You've come to the best pilot, then!" Duo said. "But I don't have any fuel. Know what that is?"
She furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "What is it?"
"Fuel is what makes the engines run."
"Oh!" She surveyed the food and picked up two carrot sticks. "Here!"
Quatre laughed. "She knows you well, Duo!"
Duo quickly ate them and made a sound like an engine starting up. "Ready to board your flight, Miss. Chang?"
"Yeah!"
Duo scooped her up and ran off.
Heero and Trowa sat down on the blanket then.
"How long do you think Duo will last?" Heero asked Wufei. "How much energy does she have today?"
"I think he'll last for a little while," Wufei surmised. "They'll come back before long for some food."
"Makes it all worth it, doesn't it?" Quatre said.
"What does?" Relena asked.
"The war," he said quietly. "Without it, we wouldn't be here. We wouldn't know one another. And...maybe without it, there would be no Leila Chang."
Trowa slipped his arm around Quatre's shoulders. "Then you're right," he said. "Almost everything was worth it, for this."
Wufei nodded. "You know," he said, gazing over to where Duo and Leila were turning in circles. He looked at Relena and hooked her hair behind her ear. "I think that even without the war I'd have found a way to you, and we'd have had Leila. Regardless, even though a lot of times the cost seemed much too high, on the other side of it all now, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way." Looking at his closest friends and family, he bowed his head. "I'm honored that you are so close to me in my life."
The sombre mood was broken by Leila's and Duo's laughter.
"Uncle Meow!" she called. "Can we go on the swings later?"
"Come eat your lunch!" he called back. "I have lots of food that you like here!" Under his voice, he asked the others, "do you think she'll ever outgrow calling me that?"
"With Duo encouraging her?" Relena asked with a laugh. "Not likely."
"Luckily she's your daughter," Heero said, picking up a finger sandwich. "Or she'll be calling you any and all of the names Duo likes to call you."
"She better not," Wufei grumbled. He smiled, taking Leila into his arms and letting her sit in his lap. "Okay baby, what do you want to eat?"
"Ice cream!"
"That's for dessert, you know that. What else do you want to eat?" he asked, wiping her hands clean with some wet wipes.
"Um..."
"The name calling aside," Trowa said to Quatre. "She's absolutely got him underneath her thumb."
Overhearing that, everyone laughed except for Wufei, who glared at Trowa. "No," he retorted. "I am not under her thumb."
"Baba, I want egg salad sandwich," Leila said, pointing to the plate.
"Here you go," he said, offering it to her.
"If not under her thumb, then at her every beck and call," Relena amended.
"Am not," Wufei grumbled.
"Baba, can I have some juice?"
"Sure baby. Yuy, can you pass the apple juice?"
"You're lucky that I can accept this one other girl in your life and your heart," Relena whispered as the others laughed.
Wufei smiled and offered her a cup of juice. "There's only the two of you," he assured her. "And you are both worth being laughed at, and a whole lot more."
