Disclaimer: I do not own Gundam Wing, nor do I own the characters. I have borrowed them here for some fun and creativity, and this is not for profit. I do, however, own the plot mentioned here, and any instances that you may find similar to real life events are purely a coincidence.
Notes: Not beta-read. This is a part of the babysiting adventures universe, inspired by Sharon's prompt "Babysitting adventures for uncles Heero, Duo, Trowa and Quatre. Wufei and Relena are the parents, of course". I should state now that the little drabbles in this universe will not be chronological at all!
Soothing Nightmares Away
The moment someone pushed the door to the bedroom open, Heero was awake. He was facing away from his door, but he listened carefully to who it was. All was still until there was a quiet sniffle and footsteps moving hesitantly towards the bed. Rolling onto his back to look, he saw Leila, vaguely outlined by the hall light that they'd left on for her sake.
"Leila?" he whispered, stretching a hand out towards her as she approached. Seeing that he was awake, she moved a little quicker and took his hand, letting him draw her close. "What's wrong?"
She made to climb onto the bed and he helped her up.
"Want Baba," she said. Beside them, Duo stirred and she started. With his hand on her back to keep her from falling off the bed, Heero felt her little heart beating quickly and hurried to sooth her.
"Just Uncle Duo," he said.
"Leila?" Duo mumbled. "What's wrong, baby?"
"I want Baba," she said again.
"Baba is out of town working with Mommy, remember?" Duo asked with a yawn. "Why are you awake?"
Leila buried her face against Heero's chest, mumbling something.
"What was that?" Heero asked, petting her hair.
"Bad people," she whispered. "They tried to get me. Baba far away."
"Just a dream," Heero said quietly. She shook her head. "Where were they?" She shrugged.
"Well," Duo said, reaching over to touch her shoulder. "Uncle Duo had a bad dream too," he said. "And I dreamed that bad people got me. But Uncle Heero saved me."
"Really?"
"Really," Duo said. "So why don't you sleep with me and Uncle Heero tonight?"
"Can I?" she asked hopefully. "But...Mr. Brown...I left him to guard the blankie."
"I'll get them for you, okay?" Duo said. He eased out of bed and went to pick up her bear and blanket, bring them back to her.
Heero took the time to ease her onto his other side so she could sleep between them, and once Duo was back, they settled her in with her bear and blanket.
"I think we can call Baba," Duo said. "He should just be waking up."
"Really?" Leila asked. "I want to talk to Baba."
"Just a short call, promise?" Heero said.
"Okay."
A minute later, they'd manage to reach him and gave the phone to Leila.
"Baba?" she said quietly into the phone. "Yeah. Bad people, Baba." She listened to his soothing voice and clutched her bear. "Okay." She lay down and curled up a little, still listening to the phone. "I miss you," she said.
Duo settled down onto her other side, gently patting her tummy to ease her into sleep. Her eyes were already drooping and she giggled. "Uncle Duo made spa...spaghetti," she said with a yawn. "I helped make salad and Uncle Heero...let me watch Uncle Duo...wash the dishes...in case he..."
Duo eased the phone away from the dozing girl.
"Wufei?" He said softly. "In case I didn't get all the tomato sauce off," Duo grumbled in explanation. "And that was only once, on one plate. I'll never hear the end of it." He yawned. "All right. She's sleeping with us. Don't worry. Talk to you soon."
Disconnecting the call, he handed the phone back to Heero, who set it aside, and lay down by Leila. She snuggled in with her bear, and looking across her, Duo could see Heero turned towards her. They bracketed the small girl, and Duo gently caressed her cheek.
"Go back to sleep," Heero said softly. "We'll need energy to keep her occupied tomorrow."
"Good point," Duo said. "Just that I had a little morning surprise for you, and it wasn't exactly this."
Heero shook his head and sighed. "There's always another day?" he asked hopefully.
"You bet," Duo said, sliding a hand over Leila until he found Heero's. "Good night, Heero," he whispered.
"Goodnight, Duo."
Leila smiled against her bear, and her uncles followed her into peaceful dreams.
