Light Me Up
The crowd bothered the both of them, but they had gone to celebrate the night with what appeared to be the rest of the city.
Duo had been adamant that they should try it at least once, to know what it really felt like. Just once.
Knowing that having a crowd press closely to them, invading their personal space, and leaving them with no escape routes at all would bother both of them, Heero decided that they needed to compromise.
Watching the event and count down on the television wasn't good enough, according to Duo.
So Heero found them a spot on the third floor of a building where they could open the window and see the events and bands play, could hear the crowds scream, without being cramped in the midst of it all.
They enjoyed themselves, with the drinks and snacks they brought, and Heero listened to Duo sing along, laughing when Duo tried to dance to one of the songs.
Five minutes before the count down, however, Heero kissed Duo, pulling him close.
"I've a challenge," he said once they separated.
"Challenge?"
"Let's get to the top of this building and see if we can manage it before we reach the new year."
"You're on."
They raced towards the stairs, laughing and taking the steps two at a time, mutually agreeing not to take the elevator. The building was only fifteen flights high and they could easily get up there with time to spare.
It was a full minute before the new year began when they reached the top, flinging the door open and breathing in deeply, laughing together.
Then, Duo pulled Heero closed and kissed him hard, breaking away shortly after to finish catching his breath.
In the distance, he could hear the crowd screaming and the blare of music.
"How much time?" he asked Heero.
"Twenty seconds."
Duo pressed their lips together again, pulling Heero tight against him for the last kiss of the year. When they parted again, the crowd was just beginning to count down.
"Ten, nine, eight," he mumbled against Heero's lips before pulling back to look his lover in the eye.
"Seven, six, five," Heero joined in with a smile.
"Four, three, two..."
As the first of the fireworks lit up the sky, their lips met again, and then again, and a third time.
"Three kisses already," Duo teased before he looked up to enjoy the fireworks. "Wow," he said. "That's beautiful."
"You are," Heero replied, drawing Duo's attention to the fact that Heero was watching him and not the fireworks. "The fireworks light up your eyes."
Duo grinned, bumping his head gently against Heero's, their fingers entangled together.
"That may be so, love, but you are the one who lights up my life."
