Birdfeeders
"Duo? What are you building?"
"A birdfeeder."
"A what?"
"A birdfeeder. You know, you hang it outside and fill it with seeds so birds can come and eat?"
"Isn't that interfering with the food web?"
"It's just a snack for them."
"But the food web..."
"I heard that some other small animals come too. Let me build this on a perch or something, so they can climb up."
"What kind of small animals?"
"I don't know. Squirrels? Maybe...raccoons?"
"And we want raccoons in our yard why?"
"...okay, so maybe we don't want raccoons. I won't build a perch then. I'll hang it in the tree."
"Is there a reason you suddenly wanted to build a birdfeeder?"
"I got the idea from Rachel. You know, the secretary? She said her daughter was doing it for a project, out of old two-litre pop bottles. So I was interested in a bit of woodwork."
"But why are you interested? There are plenty of other things you could build if you just wanted to play around with wood."
"..."
"Duo?"
"There weren't a lot of birds on L2, okay? And with our job, we don't always have the chance to look at nature. I thought...I wanted to bring a bit for us to look at out of our own window, okay?"
"From our own window?"
"Yeah."
"..."
"What?"
"It's the middle of winter. I suppose the birds would be glad there is some food for them."
"Guess so."
"So...I can get some coffee and a blanket on the couch and watch for birds with you?"
"...I guess that's the idea, Heero, provided they come."
"They will. We'll watch until they do."
"We will?"
"Well, I promise to provide entertainment if we get bored, since you made the birdfeeder and all."
"Entertai...mm. That a preview? Mm...I hope there's more where that came from."
"..."
"God, Heero, I haven't even put the thing outside yet and you're already making me wish that no birds will come."
