Notes: Not beta-read. This is the first in what will be a series, inspired by Sharon's prompt "Babysitting adventures for uncles Heero, Duo, Trowa and Quatre. Wufei and Relena are the parents, of course".

Braids

Heero unlocked the door to his and Duo's apartment and stepped in, closing the door behind him.

Turning around, he froze and stared.

"Uncle Heero!" Wufei's six-year-old daughter, Leila Chang, got up from the floor where she had been coloring on the coffee table.

A piece of candy sailed past Heero's right ear. He kept staring.

"Did you bring me something?" the little girl asked, taking a handful of Heero's shirt.

"Laugh and you're not getting any," Duo warned from where he sat on the floor.

"Not getting any what?" Leila asked curiously.

"Cream with his dessert," Duo replied smoothly, causing Heero to blush a little.

"Oh! Don't laugh, Uncle Heero!"

Heero managed a smile and bent to pick up the piece of candy before handing it to her. "Here you go, Leila," he said. It was tradition that he gave her a small piece of candy every time she was at their home, and since Heero didn't carry candy with him, Duo had taken to tossing it to Heero just has he entered. Leila hadn't quite realized it yet, but the girl was sharp and it wouldn't be long before she figured it out. For now, it was nice to see her eyes light up at the sight of the small treat.

"Thank you, Uncle Heero!" she chirped. Then, she was tugging on her hair. "Look what Uncle Duo did! He braided my hair!"

"I see that," Heero said with a smile. "It looks good on you."

"Uncle Duo said my hair isn't long enough to braid just once and for me to see it over my shoulder, so he did two!" she explained as she struggled with the candy wrapper. Heero immediately took it from her and opened it, offering her the candy. "Remember how Baba explained that Uncle Duo's name also meant 'two'? So I thought, he should have two braids too!"

That explained to Heero why his lover was sitting there with braided pigtails.

"Come back and finish your drawing, Leila," Duo said. "Then you were going to help me make the salad for dinner, right?"

"Right!" she agreed, sitting down again.

Duo stood then and Heero met him halfway to take Duo into his arms. They shared a quick kiss. "Nice," Heero commented with a small smile.

"I said, laugh and you're not getting any," Duo said. "I promised her and I don't break promises. This will stay until we take her hair out for bedtime."

"I didn't laugh," Heero said, touching the hair for a moment. "Does that mean I get cream for my dessert?"

"Maybe."

"I'll even help you take it out," Heero cajoled.

"We'll see," Duo said. "Want to sit with her for a bit? I'll go get dinner started."

"Sure," Heero answered, taking off his jacket before easing himself down between the couch and the coffee table. "What are you drawing, Leila?"

"Uncle Duo!" she answered happily. "See this?" She held up a piece of paper with a girl on it. "Uncle Duo drew me! So I am going to draw him!"

"Is it going on our fridge?" Heero asked hopefully. Leila liked to draw and although her art was much like the art of any other child, seeing the pictures on their fridge made him feel a little warm and happy; especially if Duo somehow collaborated with Leila. The current centerpiece was a picture she had drawn two weeks ago of herself with her mother and father. It was inspired by the picture they had on the wall; a whole strip of pictures of their friends and themselves.

Wufei had admonished his daughter for drawing him the same height as his wife, and the fact that Leila had colored his hair brown. In her defense, she'd lost her black crayon, and Duo was quick to defend Leila by saying that they were keeping the picture no matter what Wufei said.

Heero watched as Leila drew two pigtails for Duo, and he reached out to show her how to draw a braid. She giggled, drawing the braids a little longer than they were, not to mention so that they were sticking out a little, but the picture was adorable.

"Sign your name," Heero reminded her, remembering how they had taught her to write it on the paper the first time they'd put her art on their fridge.

"Mmhmm," she answered, scribbling her name. "There! Uncle Duo, I'm done!"

"Bring it into the kitchen and we'll put it up!" Duo called. Heero followed Leila in and watched as she showed it to Duo. Duo grimaced at the pigtails when Leila turned to the fridge, but Heero could see the affection in his eyes. The phone rang and he picked it up, greeting the caller before offering the phone to Leila.

"Go talk to Baba."

She took the phone and went to the living room. "Baba! Guess what I did today?"

Duo groaned. "I will never hear the end of this."

"Look on the bright side," Heero said, slipping his arms around Duo's waist. "She hasn't drawn me yet. She favours you."

Duo chuckled. "She did draw you. But she hid it when I told her you were coming home soon, so she could finish it next time."

"Oh?"

Duo nodded. "She wants it to be a surprise." Duo snickered.

"Will I like this surprise?" Heero asked, kissing Duo's neck.

Duo chuckled.

"Let's just say that...I think you could look pretty good with braided pigtails, too."
