Timeline: post EW, Quatre's CEO of WEI, Heero, Duo, Trowa, and Wufei are all Preventers, and they're all around 30ish.

Disclaimer: Gundam Wing, its characters and its trappings, belong to Bandai, Sotsu, and... I was sure there was someone else in there... sorry! ^^;;; Anyway, this fic is not for profit, just for fun.

Note: a little OOC for wufei? ^O^;;; I actually think, after I wrote it, that Wufei would be a lot more blunt and it would really be Heero to put up with a character like this... ^O^;; I dunno... we'll pretend that Wufei's mellowed a lot by the time he's 30, less abrasive, and with a little more social tact.

On Wednesdays, Wufei usually ate lunch with Trowa.

Unfortunately, there had been some sort of Incident involving Duo, a plane and a couple of terrorists who apparently hadn't understood the Spirit of Christmas. That was fatal with Duo. The Spirit of Christmas was NOT to be messed with.

So Heero ran off IMMEDIATELY and Trowa, of course, ran off make sure Heero didn't kill anyone along the way.

Which left Wufei on his own.

He thought maybe should have gone with.

Trowa could probably use the help.

It was rumoured that Duo had been shot.

Yeah...

Perhaps staying put had been the better choice after all.

"Excuse me, Agent Chang?"

Wufei was surprised to see a young woman standing at the door to his office.

"I'm Agent Barnes."

The name didn't ring a bell, but Wufei forced a smile for her. Judging from her uniform she was one of the newly minted batch of agents. Still so shiny and eager. You had to be nice to these ones, nurture that shininess, because it was all so fleeting and so rare these days. Best to let them live in their happy bubbles for as long as possible.

"I--I just wanted to tell you... I mean, that is... I've heard a lot about you and... You--you're my hero!"

Wufei felt his smile make a valiant effort to turn into a grimace. So it was going to be one of those days, huh? But was this better or worse than dealing with Heero on the warpath? Hard to say.

"I've been following your career since you took that bullet for Queen Relena!"

Wow, was he in trouble with this one. Maybe Heero-sitting would have been better.

"You made me want to join the Preventers, Agent Chang. I thought you were so brave and so valiant! To lay your life down for a noble cause like you did--"

Wufei held up his hand to stem the onslaught of ridiculousness.

"It's very nice to meet you, Agent Barnes. I'm happy to hear that I've made an impact on your life, but joining Preventers should be a personal decision and not one to be made on a fleeting--"

"Oh, it was totally my decision! My mother didn't want me to do it, but I told her that I wanted to be just like you and that maybe one day I would save Queen Relena too. My mother loves Queen Relena, you know. She used to work in the Sanc Palace before I was born. I've grown up listening to stories of how brave and beautiful she is. And to think that I would one day work to protect her peace? It's been my dream since forever!"

"Please, Agent Barnes?" Wufei stood up and grabbed his jacket, hoping she would get the point.

"Oh, sorry. Are you on your way out? Are you going for lunch? Where are you going? I just moved here, you see, so I'm not very familiar with the area."

Okay, Heero-sitting would definitely have been better. Every once in a while, you just got one of these and the other guys were better at shaking them off: Heero usually scared them away, Duo hid in closets, and Trowa...Trowa generally sent them along to Heero, actually. Wufei wasn't quite sure how it all worked, but suffice to say that Trowa was the least harassed out of the lot of them. Lucky bastard.

Agent Barnes followed Wufei out the door, out of the building, and across the street to his usual sandwich shop. She stood with him in line and ordered the same thing he did. He tried to stay calm.

As was his custom, Wufei took a minute while he was paying to have a little chat with the proprietors. Today, he lingered a tad longer than usual and conversed very obviously in Mandarin, so that when he finally did turn away to discover that Agent Barnes was nowhere in sight, he felt just the tiniest flare of smug self-satisfaction. Unfortunately, his luck was not to hold and as Wufei walked into the seating area of the café, he caught a glimpse of her, sitting at a table in the back and madly waving her arms at him.

Wufei pretended not to see her, letting his gaze slide right over her as if he thought she was waving at someone behind him. He then chose to sit at his favourite table by the front windows.

"Whew!" exclaimed Agent Barnes as she plopped herself down at Wufei's table. "I was waving and waving and you didn't even see me! I guess you must be really focused on a big case, huh? Is it anything you can tell me about? I majored in criminology in university and I'd love to be of any help..."

Wufei could only sigh.

The two of them ate lunch together, eating everything in the same order, in precisely the same number of bites. They got up together and they left the café together. They crossed the street together and re-entered Preventers Headquarters together. If the receptionist at the front desk was surprised to see a cheerful Agent Barnes chattering away at an Agent Chang who looked like he wanted to die, she skillfully held her giggles until the two agents got onto the elevator...together.

They got off on the same floor and walked down the hall together.

They turned left together, then left again together, and then they pushed through the fourth door on the right together--

Where Wufei suddenly whirled around and held out his arms to physically block Agent Barnes from progressing any further.

"This is the men's room," he said.
