silverkiiri: ON Heero/Duo When they're taking classes in SoCal- remember?
One Night Halloween Drabble 4
Heero drove home in the early twilight, the windows rolled down to take advantage of the crisp autumn air. He caught sight of a few early trick or treaters and smiled. They had decided not to hand out candy tonight, even though they could have. Duo had claimed that he was too tired after his classes, but Heero suspected it had more to do with the doorbell. It made him jumpy whenever it rang- he was sure Duo was still jumpy too.
Granted, they had been free of the Org for nearly a year, but still... Heero shivered. He knew the Org would never find them. They were 'dead' and no one looked for dead men, plus they were hidden with all of his skill- and Duo's.
Still, he worried. The classes they were taking were valuable- but it meant he had to spend a large portion of the day away from Duo. He didn't like it. He knew Duo didn't like it. They had spent so much time together over the years that it was hard to be apart now.
But they were almost finished. Another few weeks and they'd go back to Winner.
Heero pulled his car into their space and headed towards their apartment, dodging a few trick or treaters and a misplaced pumpkin. The lights were on, which meant Duo was home already.
Heero opened the front door and stepped inside. His lover wasn't in the front room or the kitchen. Usually he met Heero at the door, his gun out and ready.
Duo was nothing if not cautious.
Frowning, Heero locked the door behind him and headed for the bedroom. "Duo?" he called softly, but got no answer.
The bedside light was on, but dimmed, barely illuminating the man on the bed.
Heero's keys fell from his fingers and his heart stopped.
Duo lay on the bed, his shirt bloodied, his throat a massive wound.
Heero slid to the ground with a thump.
No. No. No. It couldn't be. No one could kill Duo. Hadn't they already sent the best they had? Duo couldn't be dead.
He needed to get up. He needed to get over to the bed and touch Duo. See if he was still alive.
There was no way he could still be alive, the small cold voice in the back of his mind pointed out. Not with that wound. Look at all the blood.
Duo's blood.
He failed.
Heero covered his head with his hands and wept, knowing that Duo's killer might still be in the apartment and not caring in the least. What was the point in staying alive now?
"Heero?"
Heero's arms tightened around his head. He hadn't heard anything. Duo couldn't talk. Not with his throat gone...
"Heero?" Hands touched his arms, tugged on him. "Heero? What is it? What's wrong? What happened?"
He looked up into Duo's face. "You're dead."
Duo blinked. "I'm... no I'm not." His fingers touched Heero's cheek, brushed at the tears. "I'm not."
Heero reached up and grabbed Duo's shirt. "You are. Your throat."
Duo very gently lifted Heero to his feet. "I'm not. Come with me." He pulled Heero to the bathroom and Heero watched as Duo pulled off his bloodied shirt, swabbed at his throat with a washcloth.
"We were doing horror movie makeup, you know, for Halloween. I left it on to show you how good I was getting. I fell asleep. I didn't mean to, but I did. I didn't hear you come in. I'm so sorry. I'm not dead, though, see?"
Duo's throat was smooth and unmarked. Heero touched it gently and shivered. Duo's fingertips were back on his face, wiping the rest of the tears away.
"I've never seen you cry before."
"I've never thought you were dead before." Heero pulled him close, kissed him. Duo could feel the shakiness in him still and returned the kiss warmly.
"Come here," Duo pulled him towards the bed, tumbled him down on the sheets. "I'm so sorry," he said again, curling around Heero, sharing his warmth.
"It's all right," Heero smiled faintly, but Duo noted how Heero's hands were tight on his shoulders. "Just threw me off balance."
"And here I thought nothing could disturb that calmness of yours," Duo tried to tease, but Heero kissed him fiercely.
"Losing you would do more than disturb me," he said when he finally let Duo go.
For some strange reason, that made Duo suddenly happy. "Guess you are just as crazy about me as I am about you."
"Never doubt it."
