Mage vs. Guard Drabble 12

Duo looked up at the little dragon chittering above his head and frowned. "I know, I know," he said as he took the staircase three steps at a time. "But I can't fly- this is the best I can do." The dragon chirruped grumpily and Duo sighed. "Aren't you his familiar? You could've snatched the envelope away or something."

Before the blink dragon could retort, Duo reached the door of the rooms he shared with Heero. He pushed the door open quickly, half-expecting to find that his mage had foolishly run off on some stupidly dangerous mission without him.

Much to his surprise, he found Heero in his workroom intent over some sort of potion. "Duo?" Heero gave him a puzzled look. "I thought you had practice for another hour?"

"Wing said you got some sort of urgent message," Duo gestured to the blink dragon. She had gone to perch on Heero's shoulder and rub her cheek against his. Heero raised his eyebrows and reached up to scratch the little dragon's eye ridges.

"The two of you need to relax," he scolded gently. "Not every urgent message means that I'm about to do something stupid- like leaving without my bodyguard or familiar. Trust me, I have learned my lesson."

Duo wasn't sure that was true, but since his mage was still there and in one piece, he decided not to argue the point. "So what was the urgent message about?"

Heero turned back to his potion, giving it a few stirs. "Quatre is planning on doing a summoning for a familiar later tonight. He needs backup."

"A summoning on Midwinter's Eve? Can't he just celebrate it like everyone else with some good food and warm drinks?"

"Well, it is the only time of year he can summon this particular familiar- and he's going to need backup."

Oh no. "Why do I get the feeling that he's not just going for a whelpling like Relena?"

"He's going for a wraith." Heero added a few more ingredients to his potion and stirred it again.

"Aren't those only familiars for dark mages?" And supposedly, very dangerous to summon? Duo didn't like the sound of this at all.

"He claims he needs one to help him teach Defense Against the Dark Arts better. I guess Relena agreed."

"And you're going to help him?"

"He asked nicely enough. Why not?"

Duo groaned and covered his eyes. "Oh, I don't know. He's summoning a being that lives on fear. It's notoriously dangerous to summon. Do I need another reason? It's not exactly cute and fluffy, Heero- and how is he going to feed it?"

"We are at a mage school, Duo. I imagine there's plenty of fear to feed off of around exam time." Heero laughed at his guard and the blink dragon on his shoulder hummed in amusement.

"You stop that-" Duo pointed a finger at her. "You know the mages won't let me in the summoning room- you're the one that's going to have to watch his back in there." The little dragon reared up and hissed, spreading her wings. "Okay, okay, I know you're capable. I just worry."

Heero reached out and pulled his guard close. "It will be okay, Duo. Quatre can handle this, and Wing will be there to watch my back. We'll be back before you can miss us."

Duo laughed a little at that. "I still want to be outside that room-"

"You'll miss the feast-"

"Do you think I care about that?"

"All right. Wait for me outside the room. As soon as it's over, we can go to the feast."

Quatre had warned Duo- and his own bodyguard, a big jovial fellow named Rashid- that under no circumstances were they to enter the summoning room. "If something goes wrong, it needs to be contained, not unleashed on the school."

Duo was unhappy about that, but he reminded himself that if there was something that Heero, Quatre and Barton couldn't deal with, then the chances were slim that he and Rashid could tip the balance.

But there was always the possibility that they could...

Still, he'd just nodded agreement, given Heero a look that clearly said he wanted the mage back in one piece, let Wing give him a little caress of reassurance and then watched the door close behind them. Rashid suggested a card game, and so there they were, hours later, still waiting for the door to open.

Food had been sent up from the feast, and Rashid was very good company, but Duo still fretted about his mage. He'd really prefer being where he could see Heero...

When the door finally opened, Duo was on his feet immediately. Wing was the first out, keening anxiously, she flew right for him and Duo's stomach flipped. Had something bad happened? Quatre stood in the doorway, leaning heavily on the frame, looking as if he was going to fall over. On his shoulder was something that made Duo's eyes hurt.

Before Duo could push past him, Quatre moved, heading for the couch. "We did it- but Rashid- Trowa's going to need a hand-"

Heero was already in the doorway when Duo reached it. He looked exhausted and he didn't protest when Duo put an arm around his waist. He just yawned and leaned heavily against his guard.

"Bed?" He asked plaintively and Duo nodded. Getting a better grip on Heero, he headed for the door.

"Thanks for your help," Quatre said as they reached it and Heero yawned again, waving a hand in response. "Oh," the other mage added, "don't forget your midwinter present." A small package was tossed their way. Duo caught it and then turned his attention to getting Heero back to their own rooms.

Once there, he got Heero to the bedroom and on to the bed. "Everything really go okay?" He asked as he bent to help Heero pull his boots off and the mage nodded sleepily.

"Oh yes. Apparently, it just takes a lot of energy to summon a wraith. I'll be fine in the morning after some sleep." He gave Duo an apologetic look. "I'm sorry, this isn't really the way to spend Midwinter's Eve. I know the feast is still going- it's got to be present time now-"

"I'd rather be with you." Duo finished with the boots and helped Heero lay down. "Plus, we have Quatre's gift-" He fished it out of his pocket and frowned a little- was it safe to open? Heero reached out for it without hesitation, pulling a small cube out of the bag. He chuckled sleepily.

"Typical..."

"What is it?"

"A dream cube. It lets you share dreams with the people beside you- and whoever is holding the cube controls the dream." Heero handed it to him, yawning again. "It's something that Quatre sells a lot of-" he yawned, eyes nearly closing. "Sorry- have to sleep..."

"It's okay." Duo brushed his fingers across Heero's forehead, a plan already forming in his mind. He took off his own boots and stretched out beside his sleeping lover, cube firmly grasped in his fingers. Wing chittered at him and he laughed back at her. "You didn't think I was going to not take advantage of this situation, did you?"

The blink dragon made her amused sound and blew out the light before heading out of the room. She didn't intend to miss the feast...
