Mage vs. Guard Drabble 11

"No."

Duo blinked at his mage, hard at work deciphering some text that had been recently dug out of the archives. "What?"

"Whatever it is- no. I can't. I'm busy."

"I didn't say anything."

"You didn't have to," Heero looked up and frowned at his guard, who was leaning casually on the door frame of his workroom. "I know you."

"You've been working on that thing for two days now."

"Yes. So?"

Duo shrugged gracefully. "It's just- the weather is so nice today."

"Then go out in it," Heero countered. "Get a tan or something."

His guard didn't reply, obviously focused on something outside the window. Heero frowned and bent back over his work, doing his best to ignore the man in the doorway.

Duo just stood there, counting quietly in his mind, as he watched the preparations being made outside.

He hit fifty before his mage snapped at him: "Don't you have something to do?"

"My job," Duo looked away from the window and smiled pleasantly. "I'm your bodyguard, remember? Keeping you safe?"

"I'm perfectly safe here. Can't you go train the new recruits with Chang?"

"Nope. He's given them the day off."

Heero stopped and looked up. "Really? Chang did? Did they do something to him?"

"Of course not. It's just- it's the first day of Spring-"

Understanding flooded Heero's expression. "Right. The festival. So why don't you go to that?"

"I'd rather be here with you."

"Duo-" Heero sighed and turned away from his work. "Look- I promise- I'll be right here- I won't run off and do something stupid. Go ahead and enjoy yourself- you deserve a break-"

"So do you," Duo smiled at him.

"I hate festivals and you know it."

"I do. Look- if I let you work today, will you at least join me for the evening celebration? You know by then your eyes will be tired- and you'll need a break-"

"All right," Heero gave him a grateful smile and turned back to his work. Duo grinned to himself and slid out of the room.

Three... two... one...

"Duo!"

"What?" He leaned back into the workroom and gave the mage an innocent look.

"The only festivities tonight are the old-style blessing on the fields- I'm not-"

"You already promised- can't back out now."

Heero snorted. "At least bring a blanket this year? And find a place with no poisonous plants?"

"Of course! I already have one picked out."

"You would..."
