Him to Die Part 1

"So," Heero flipped the picture over and studied the target. "This Duo Maxwell- how do you want him to die?" The picture was grainy- obviously a photo from some sort of surveillance equipment. The young man in the picture was getting into an old car, his lips parted as if he was speaking to someone out of the camera's range. He was handsome, the sort of person who would rate a second look if passed by on the street-

What had he done to warrant this sort of attention? The file they'd sent him said he was a private investigator- but one that handled only small cases... Had Maxwell gotten too close to something big?

Heero waited as the comm system took his words, blurred the tones of his voice and transmitted them- to where? Heero hadn't been able to trace where the job was coming from or who had posted the inquiry in the first place. Not too unusual, true, but he would feel better knowing who was pulling the strings on this job...

"That's part of the special terms," his possible client replied, his voice also blurred and unrecognizable. "We need him to be- a guest of sorts before any sort of final solution is carried out."

Heero rolled his eyes. Couldn't out and out say what they wanted even now? "That will cost more," he said after a moment. "That sort of thing is- difficult to arrange."

"Can you arrange it?"

"Of course. I'm only saying it will cost extra- it wasn't mentioned in the initial inquiry. Am I to hold and turn him over to you- or hold him and then carry out the final solution?"

A longer pause. Was the speaker conferring with someone else? "Hold and then carry out the contract. We might need pictures- some video to confirm that we have him. Can you accommodate that?"

Heero made a mental note- they were going to hold Maxwell's confinement over someone. "Yes."

"Then we will pay a third more for a week of guest accommodations- will that be acceptable?"

"Yes. When do you wish pick up?"

"As soon as possible. Contact us when the pick up is complete and the first payment will be made."

"Agreed." Heero waited for them to cut the connection before closing down his end. He frowned at the screen beside him. No luck on a trace- just the general knowledge that the call hadn't originated planet side. So either someone on the colonies- or someone that could afford to bounce the call up and back again... and they were willing to pay quite a lot for this job...

Which meant he'd better hurry and get things set up. The one thing he didn't need was for the client to get nervous and hire someone else. That would make things more complicated than they already were.

Getting to his feet, he picked up his two job bags and headed for the van. He should have plenty of time on the drive to decide how to do the grab....

Duo rubbed his eyes with his free hand and then reached for his coffee cup. Damn late nights were killing him, but at least he'd be able to make the rent this month. He hated the divorce jobs, but they paid the bills, but he couldn't afford to turn down any sort of work these days.

The coffee was cold and failed to provide him with the jolt that he needed. Ah hell, he was almost home anyway. He'd send the pictures to his client and then crash.

As he pulled into his complex, he cursed fluently. Damn it- someone had taken his parking space again! A big white van, the type favored by contractors, was taking up his space. Granted, the free space beside it was open, but Duo was still inclined to do a little carjacking. It's not like the spaces weren't clearly marked!

Those vans were easy to hot wire and he could just park it over on the other side of the complex...

He parked next to the van and glared at it. If he wasn't already on the bad side of some of the local law enforcement he'd try it- but with his luck they'd send one of the unfriendlies out to speak to him...

Damn it all anyway. Duo got out of his car and slammed the door closed, dropping his keys in the process. "Fuck," he said aloud and bent down to get them.

He heard the door of the van open behind him and for a moment he was happy- he could give someone a piece of his mind about taking parking spaces that weren't theirs-

But then something hit him right behind the ear and everything vanished into the dark.

Heero pulled the unconscious man into the van and secured the door. He checked Maxwell's vitals before carefully strapping his target into the backseat. Just in case he was pulled over- it would be easy to explain his 'sleeping friend'. A quick search turned up only a wallet- no weapon of any kind that he could find. Heero huffed out a breath- Maxwell hadn't known someone was after him?

He checked the mirrors and sensors again. They didn't show any changes- but better safe than sorry. He didn't want anyone interfering in this job.

Sitting down in the driver's seat, he started the van and pulled smoothly out of the parking spot and then out of the complex. No one followed- but he wasn't going to run the risk. He was several hours away from his destination- but he'd have to take a little longer just to make sure no one was following.

Stretching a little, he settled himself in, rolling his shoulders to relax the tension that had built up as he'd sat in the dark, waiting for Maxwell to get home. It had been sheer luck that the other man had dropped his keys- Heero had been expecting a fight. He hadn't thought he'd be lucky enough to pull off a quick knockout like that.

Course- it wasn't a good sign of things to come- when things went well at first it was usually a good indicator that something was going to go bad later on down the line.

Heero checked the sensors again, risking a quick glance over his shoulder to do a visual confirm. Maxwell was still out for the count, sprawled and secured into the back seat.

Hopefully he'd stay that way for a bit.
