Hey Jealousy Part 3
"Heero- what the hell are you doing?"
It's the wrong thing to say, I know it immediately- if it even is Heero on the other end!- I hear a faint indrawn breath, just a wisp of sound. Someone is there- I can only hope it's Heero...
"Heero? Talk to me, please! I don't understand why you're doing this..."
Answer me, answer me...
A faint reply. "I left you a note..." Heero's voice. Thank god.
"I got it. I read it." What do I say? "It's not enough!" Snapping again, damn it. "Please love, please come home and talk to me about it- we can fix this."
"Can't be fixed... I've tried...I really did, Duo, but I just couldn't..." It hurts to hear the despair in his voice. How have I missed this for so long?
"Of course not- I wasn't helping you."
"You shouldn't have to..." His voice is a little stronger.
"Yes, I should. I love you. I want to help you."
"Duo-" For just a moment, his tone warms and I think I have him convinced to turn around on his own. "Duo- I love you too...but I think it's too late... I'm sorry... I don't want you hurt..."
Before I can tell him that he's hurting me right now, the phone clicks off in my ear.
Damn it! Of course it wouldn't be that easy!
I look down at the phone's tiny screen. It is now displaying a moving red blip against the map I pulled up earlier.
Unless Heero ditched the phone- I've got him.
Now I just have to get to him in time.
~*~
I toss the phone down beside me on the seat, hands shaking. Too close. Too close to giving in... but I don't dare. Duo might think that it's an easy fix, but I know better.
How can I explain to him that I know this isn't simple jealousy? That I'm not exaggerating when I say that I know I'll end up hurting him? I'm sure he thinks this is an overreaction, sure that he thinks it can all be solved easily, but I know it can't... even if Duo stops talking to everyone else, locks himself up in our apartment... it won't be enough.
I'm over-rationalizing. I know it. I don't know anything for sure- not yet. I'm sorry Duo woke up and discovered my absence when he did... a few more hours and all this would be settled one way or another...
Settling myself back into the seat, I focus on the road. Only a little bit longer...
The building is dark when I get there, luckily I've been here many times before- I know my way well enough. I get out of the car and head towards the elevators.
The tiny screen springs to life at my touch. "Password?"
"Duo."
"Correct password entered. Welcome Heero Yuy. The doctor is waiting for you." I almost smile. The doctor can't do anything else after all. Not anymore.
The elevator doors slide open and I step into the waiting car. It's a short ride up to the correct floor. The lights are on, the screen glows a pale blue.
"Heero," the voice of my mentor echoes across the room. "It isn't time for your report. What has gone wrong?"
I close my eyes for a moment. "A personality disorder has surfaced."
"Severe?"
"It seems so."
"Do you wish to hurt people?"
"I don't wish to, but I fear that I will."
A pause. If this was my old mentor standing across the room from me, I would assume that he was thinking- but it's not. It's an AI program that the doctor put in place before he was captured by Oz all that time ago. It has his memories, his voice... but that's all. It's an image on the screen.
But it is still obscurely comforting.
"Come and sit down, m'boy. I need more data."
I do as it bids, perching myself on the chair in front of the screen.
"What is your current plan?" It asks.
"If you agree that I am a danger, then I will terminate."
The image nods. "A good plan. Tell me more about the disorder."
~*~
The tracking system leads me to a small building- and for a moment I despair until my headlights show me Heero's car parked in a small niche.
I park my own car and grab the flashlight out of the back. The area is dark and I have a feeling this won't be an easy place to break in.
Why would he come here?
I find an elevator with a small screen beside it. Great, it needs a code of some kind... I wonder what kind of code it will demand? Cautiously I touch the screen.
"Password?"
No keyboard or number pad pops up- that means this is either voice or word activated... damn it, what would he use?
"Heero."
"Password denied."
Of course it wouldn't be that easy! What the hell would he use?
"Wing, 01, 9mm, gundam, glock, mission..."
"Password denied."
Slamming my hand against my forehead doesn't do much more than make me feel better. What would he use? How could I not guess right away? Maybe I didn't know him at all... maybe he'd been hiding a lot more than his jealousy from me...
"Think Duo!"
"Correct password entered. Welcome Heero Yuy. The doctor is waiting for you."
Doctor?
TBC...
