Step Right Up
I glared up at my father. He was regarding me with a slightly amused expression, and I didn't think that was kind. Was he never going to take me seriously? I was nearly an adult! Or would be in four years...
"Meiran, what did you expect?"
"They cheated!" I said again, trying to make him understand. "I know they did!"
"That's a serious accusation to make, Meiran," my father lifted an eyebrow at me. I knew what that meant- he wanted me to prove it to him. So I picked the best way I knew how.
"Mama said so too."
My father looked over my head at my mother. "You know those games are all rigged, Wufei," my mother said- and I could tell she was mad too.
"It's not right!" I said, catching my father's attention. "They should play fair! That's what you always say!"
A soft chuckle interrupted me. I turned to the man beside my father. "It's not funny, Uncle Duo!" I had thought he'd be on my side! Why was he laughing?
He just smiled at me. "You're right sweetheart, it isn't. Why don't you go have fun with your Mom and Dad and let Uncle Heero and I go take a look at those games?"
That was more like it, but... "What are you going to do? I don't want you getting into trouble."
Uncle Heero laughed. "I'll keep him out of trouble, don't worry."
"That's not reassuring," my mother said before I could speak. I agreed with her. Uncle Duo could get anyone into trouble, even Uncle Heero...
Uncle Duo rolled his eyes. "I see what you're up to woman. Getting us to baby-sit. Fine, we'll take the munchkin." He gave me a grin that showed me he was teasing. So I ended up following my uncles back to the game booths while my parents slipped away.
"Where did you try?" Uncle Heero asked me, as we got close.
"That one. We were supposed to knock all the bottles over, and I hit the bottom of the stack... but they didn't all fall over."
I saw him watch the game for a minute as two boys only a little older than me tried the game. They lost of course and I felt bad for them.
But Uncle Heero was nodding...
"Got this one?" Uncle Duo asked him.
"Piece of cake." Uncle Heero stepped up to the counter. I saw him pay for the two baseballs; pick one up in his hand... and then two of the stacks of bottles fell over.
I blinked. His hand was empty and the other baseball was still sitting on the counter. When had he moved? How did he do that?
"Nice job," I heard Uncle Duo murmur.
"Just a judicious application of force." Uncle Heero shook his head and tossed the last ball at the remaining tower. It fell completely apart and the man behind the counter couldn't seem to close his jaw. "Pick your prize, Mei."
When I finished picking out a good bear, Uncle Duo was already at the next booth, firing away at the targets with an air gun, humming happily under his breath. The woman in this booth looked much like the man in the first.
"Having fun?" Uncle Heero asked when we joined him.
"Great fun. Sight was a little off, but that's no problem..."
He chose the prize for me, a stuffed panther, larger than the bear from the first booth. "Where next?" he asked with a grin.
Uncle Heero looked at his watch. "We have time to do them all..."
I will never forget the look on my father's face when we met up with him and my mother by the gates, our arms overflowing with stuffed toys.
"How are we supposed to take all those things home?!?"
