For samikitty- who asked for: 1) werebunnies 2) werewolves? 3) wereplatypus...4) The Great Pumpkin
I tried to hit them all!
Halloween Drabble 51
"They don't sound bad, but trust me! Those little eyes and wriggling noses hide a batch of the sharpest pointiest teeth you've ever seen!"
"I would think werewolves would be worse."
"Not at all! Not even the were platypus is as feared!"
"Aren't those things poisonous? I think that would beat cuteness on the fear scale."
"Not even close!"
I really shouldn't bait him when he was like this. I eyed the level in Duo's glass and decided to go with disbelief. "Hn." He didn't catch my look at his glass, only leaned forward over our makeshift table and poked at my arm.
"It's true! They are the worst of them all!"
"Were bunnies," I repeated and shifted a little, trying to get comfortable. Having a Halloween party in a pumpkin patch sounded like a great idea in theory, but in reality... Then again I hadn't been dancing or drinking- and everyone else had been doing plenty of both. Maybe you didn't notice the lumpiness of the ground under the soft blankets when your feet hurt and your head was spinning?
"Were rabbits," Duo corrected me.
"You know, I'd think that a were rabbit would be more interested in draining the juice from veggies rather than people," I said, and watched Duo blink at me.
"Well they are," he said after a moment. "But if you get between them and their veggies- watch out!"
"I will," I said, hoping to ease him off this topic. "So, how much longer do you think this is going to go?"
"Didn't you read the invitation? Until the Great Pumpkin shows up of course!"
I had read it, I just hadn't understood it. I knew at some point I'd be able to get Duo to explain it to me. "So, we're going to vote on a pumpkin or something?"
"No," Duo shook his head and seemed to have trouble getting it to stop. "No, the Great Pumpkin comes to the most sincere of the pumpkin patches and then from there goes on to deliver toys-"
"That sounds like Santa."
Duo shrugged. "I think so too, but it's not smart to argue with the Charlie Brown special, you know?"
I didn't know what the hell a Charlie Brown special was, but I knew I couldn't wait around to see some pumpkin show up. As it was I had seen plenty of them already this evening- and a small, unmistakable feeling was telling me that it was time to get moving. I got to my feet and gave Duo a smile.
"I have to go. I'll see you at work on Monday."
Duo squinted at his watch and then glared up at me. "It's not that late, Heero. Why leave now?"
"I have some things to do." I nudged my untouched glass closer to him before turning to leave. "Have fun," I called over my shoulder and headed towards my car. I waved at Trowa and Quatre on the way- they were busy on the dance floor and didn't stop to question me.
As I unlocked my car, the feeling returned- worse than before. Damn it. Why couldn't I have a curse tied to the moon? Damn the docs anyway...
"Heero!" Duo's voice made me whirl around in surprise.
"What are you doing here?"
"I thought you could give me a ride home." He stuck his hands in his pockets and smiled sheepishly. "I hitched a ride over with Wufei, but he's busy with Relena- and I want to go home-"
"I don't think I-" Pain washed over me and I clutched at the car for a minute.
"Heero? You okay?" Duo grabbed my shoulders. "You've gone all pale- are you sick?"
"It's-" I tried to think of a plausible excuse- but then I ran out of time.
The change washed through me and a moment later I was fighting to free my head from my shirt. One of these days I'd manage to get my clothes off first...
The shirt was suddenly gone and a strong hand lifted me by the scruff of the neck. I growled, but Duo ignored it.
"Don't believe in were animals, hm?" He said and shook his head at me. "I thought the docs had to be experimenting on someone other than me," he muttered as he tucked me under his arm and retrieved my keys from the ground. "Looks like you're the one who needs a ride home now."
Depositing me on the passenger seat, he tossed my clothes in the backseat and got behind the wheel. Giving into the inevitable, I curled up, putting my head on my paws.
Duo scratched behind my ears and I closed my eyes in bliss. How did he know about that itchy spot?
"It's a good thing you're cute," he muttered as he started the car. "I'm not usually that fond of dogs..."
I wondered what he meant by that...
