Halloween Drabble 43

"You haven't seen him?"

Relena shook her head. "Nope. He came in early this morning according to the front desk, but he wasn't here when I got in. Did... something happen? Have a fight?"

"Not exactly," Duo told her and it was the truth. They hadn't had a fight- mostly because Heero had taken off before Duo could say anything. Not that he had been ready to say anything. He knew how this went, but yesterday... well, it had been a little different. "If he comes back- will you tell him I'm looking for him?"

"Of course."

Duo hurried out of the office before Relena could ask any more questions. He stopped by the news desk. "Anything big going down, Larry?"

"Totally quiet," said the man with a shrug.

Damn it. Duo retreated to his cubical and sat down at his desk. Closing his eyes he tried his last resort.

Quatre?

I'm here.

Where's Heero? Has something come up somewhere?

I have not sent him a summons.

That's not what I asked.

A mental sigh. You know I don't betray a confidence.

Is he okay? Can you tell me that much?

Yesterday was... upsetting for him.

Not just for him.

I know. A flash of sympathy. If he contacts me, I will let Heero know you are looking for him.

Thanks.

Duo opened his eyes and sighed. He didn't have anything pressing on his desk- maybe it was time to take the afternoon off.

He walked down the streets towards home slowly, watching the wind pick up leaves and hurl them through the air. They gave him excuses to cast glances upwards, look for a flash of blue and red in the sky.

Nothing. Of all the times to be quiet and peaceful... not that he wanted anything bad to happen, he enjoyed the peaceful times, but...

He reached his building, buying a bag of small green apples from the market on the first floor. They were Heero's favorites and for an insane moment he contemplated leaving a bowl of them on his balcony as some sort of lure...

Apparently his desperation knew no bounds.

Once inside his apartment he checked his machine for messages. Nothing. Tossing himself down on the futon, he lifted his hand and regarded the green ring on his finger. It shouldn't be used for frivolous things, he knew that.

A tapping sound on the window made him sit up in sudden hope, but it was just one of the branches of the small tree he kept out there.

He got to his feet and grabbed a piece of paper and a pen. There was frivolous and then there was his own sanity... and he knew what happened when Green Lanterns went insane.

Heero put his chin on his knees and contemplated the sun setting on the horizon. Sometimes he wanted nothing more than to give up the Superman thing and just be Heero Yuy. He knew he couldn't. He was needed.

But, sometimes, especially after times like yesterday, he really wished that he could.

An ordinary man wouldn't be put into the sort of situations he kept ending up in. It wasn't like he hadn't had the conversation with Duo before- but having to deal with that sort of thing over and over- and yesterday had been one of the worst. Yesterday had been one of their own...

A small sparkle of green light caught his attention, dancing just out of reach. He looked up and realized it was a glowing green bird- a tiny one, sparrow sized.

Only one person could make a green bird. He stood up and it caught sight of him, arrowing up towards him in a flash.

He held his hand out and it dropped a small piece of paper in his hands before vanishing in a shower of sparks.

I'm not mad. Please come see me?

Relief rose up inside of him. The sun had gone down- it was dark enough and so he dove off the building without a second thought, heading for Duo's building as fast as he could go.

Duo's window was open, the light within warmly welcoming, but Heero still paused at the sill.

"Come in." His lover was on the futon, still in his work clothes, a sketchpad in his lap. "Did my messenger find you?"

Heero held out the small piece of paper. "I wouldn't blame you if you were mad."

Duo shook his head and patted the space next to him. "Only if you decided to take him up on that offer."

"No!" Heero moved quickly, dropping himself down beside Duo. "No- never. I mean- he's a good superhero and all- and I'm not sorry we saved him, but- no."

"You didn't have to run off like that."

"I... your expression... I just couldn't..."

"Idiot." Duo dropped the sketchpad onto the floor and then leaned backwards, pulling Heero down with him. "It just surprised me. I mean, it shouldn't have because people well, try for you all the time. Even Relena ogles the tights, I know, but he's- well, he's one of us-" Duo shrugged a little. "And he's known you longer- you're friends- and well, he's strong too. He could... do some things better than I can. So, I admit it. It sort of took me by surprise- made me worry, a little. You know."

"It took me by surprise too." Heero put his cheek against Duo's shoulder. "But you shouldn't worry, not even a little."

"I know. It's stupid of me..."

"I do it too."

"You do not."

"Ah, when whatshername- Hilde? Wonder Girl? When she visited last month I was very worried."

"You never said anything."

"She never threw herself at you in public, kissed you or declared her undying love. I didn't really have anything to point at and say: 'this worries me!' You on the other hand, have several situations to point at."

Duo chuckled. "You don't have anything to worry about anyway. She was way more taken with fishboy."

"You're kidding."

"Nope." Duo laughed. "Trust me on that one." He ran his fingers through Heero's hair and kissed his forehead. "Trust me always. Don't run off like that next time, okay?"

"It wasn't that I didn't trust you. I just... I hate hurting you. If I could give all of this up-"

"You wouldn't. You're needed. Just like I am."
