Deliveryman Three Drabble 2
The sun hadn't set yet, but it was already dark. One of the things about living in the woods, under the canopy of branches- dark comes early. Heero didn't usually stay out late when he went off into the woods, but I worried all the same. He could deal with most things, but accidents happen- not to mention the whole unpredictable wild animal aspect. For all I knew, that bear was still out there, holding a grudge. True, the stupid precog should warn me if he was in trouble- but I still didn't trust it.
I sat on the back porch steps, hoping to see Heero emerge from the trees soon. It was getting darker and the air was getting chill. Where was he?
"Duo."
Surprised, I spun in place, smacking my head on the railing. "Ow!"
"Be careful!" Heero knelt beside me, one hand out to cup the back of my head. A little late, in my opinion, unless he thought I was going to do it again. "What are you doing out here? It's getting cold."
"Waiting for you." I squinted at him.
"How many of me do you see?"
"I didn't hit my head that hard."
"Maybe, but this is you. How many fingers am I holding up?"
"Two."
"Good enough." He put a hand under my elbow and helped me up. "Inside."
Once we were back in the cabin, he sat me down on the sofa and examined the back of my head. "No lump this time."
"I only bumped it." I rolled my eyes at him. "And I wouldn't have done that if you hadn't surprised me."
He tilted my head forward and kissed the sore spot. "I'm sorry."
Those are words Heero says to me a lot, even though I tell him not to, and they always sound like he's apologizing for more than whatever small sin he's committed. Reaching up, I tugged him down beside me on the couch. He wrapped his arms around me, his warmth driving away the last of the chill.
"Better now?" He asked softly.
"Yes." I said, but didn't let him go. "It's always better when you're here."
