Quick recap: Heero's got a multiple personality, Duo heals fast and is psychic- and it's all the docs fault. They have been living out in the woods away from everyone, but Relena has suddenly shown up on their doorstep. Heero is NOT happy to see her cause she is a 'threat' since she turned him over to the docs in the first place cause she was being mind-controlled by Doro. Oh- and this font is Heero's inner beast thoughts....

You know, this fic is proof that I'm insane.

Deliveryman Three Part 2

Sometimes, despite my so called psychic powers- I am completely and totally wrong. I figured that the Preventers would eventually be calling us in to help them find Relena- once they were assured that we hadn't taken her that is...

I did not expect to open my front door on my way out to gather the mail and find the girl on my front porch.

Of all the times for my "powers" to betray me like this...

"Duo?" Her hand was lifted, almost as if she was going to knock on the door when I had opened it. Maybe she had been.

"Relena," I blinked at her for a moment and then scanned the yard behind her. "Are you... here by yourself?"

She nodded.

"You know- everyone thinks you were kidnapped again."

Her eyes widened. "But- I left a note!"

Hm, Quatre hadn't mentioned a note. "Well, either they didn't find it or they did and thought you had been forced to write it. Quatre called this morning to make sure Heero hadn't kidnapped you."

Speaking of- I needed to call him back before they tracked her here... this was not going to look good otherwise.

Relena of course, didn't pay any attention to that. "Heero? Is he here?"

"Why do you want to know?"

Okay, so that wasn't polite, but really, I'm a possessive and jealous bastard. Having the golden girl show up out of nowhere and ask to see my lover made my hackles rise a bit.

Well... more than a bit...

"I need to talk to him. Please?"

"Why?" I felt justified in asking that one.

She turned red. "I... I wanted to see how he was doing. They said that... he wasn't feeling well after that whole... incident with Dorothy. I had hoped he'd be... back to himself, but it's been so long..."

What a diplomatic way putting that little problem.

She turned redder. "I kept asking... but no one knew anything about it, and I was at this dinner with Quatre..."

Funny how Quatre left that part out...

"... and he said that Heero would never really be okay again..." She looked down at her feet. "It was my fault... I wanted to apologize."

Oh hell. I knew what it was like to "wake up" and realize that I had done things that had hurt people...

"Come in," I said and backed up so that she could join me in the hallway. "Let me go call..."

It was only the quick flash of my sixth sense that saved Relena. I yanked her out of the way even as Heero lunged at her.

Damn it! How could I have forgotten! I shoved Relena behind me and faced my snarling lover.

"Heero!"

He bent his head and growled. "Relena Peacecraft. Threat level is 90%. Threat must be terminated."

Oh shit.

Relena's hands tightened on my sleeves and Heero's growl intensified.

"Relena, get outside as fast as you can." With her out of visible range, I should be able to calm Heero down.

I felt her shake her head frantically as her grip cut off the circulation in my arms.

Okay... I needed a new plan.

~*~

She was near him... the enemy... near him... touching him....

She would not take him from me....

He was mine!

~*~

Heero growled again- he didn't sound happy.

I backed up and he followed, pace by pace.

"Relena, out the front door. Now. I won't let him come after you."

A faint squeak.

This was not helping.

I took a deep breath. I was going to have to move very fast...

Too bad that I already knew Heero was faster.

Reaching back, I pulled Relena's hands off my arms, then as quickly as I could, opened the front door and shoved her outside.

Danger! My sixth sense warned.

I would've told it I already knew that, but I didn't have time.

Just as I slammed the door closed, Heero's body crashed into mine, his teeth closing down on my shoulder.

We fell to the floor, my head hitting the door on the way down. I was too dazed to push Heero off...

Not that I could've if I wanted to- he was a lot stronger than me.

"Duo?"

"Ow," I managed, and Heero shifted off of me.

I blinked up at him wondering if he was going to try for the door again.

He didn't. He touched his mouth- it looked like it was bleeding- and his eyes grew wide.

"No..."

It was nearly a whimper. I reached out for him and pain shot through my shoulder. "Heero?"

"I'm sorry... I... I..."

And he was gone. Down the hallway- and then I heard the back door slam.

What the hell? Was he going around the back to get to Relena?

I levered myself off of the floor and flung open the front door, intent on getting Relena back inside as fast as possible.

The moment I opened the door, she flung herself at me, sobbing hysterically, only to shove herself away again a moment later.

"Duo!" She cried and clutched at my shoulder.

My vision swam for a moment.

Ow.

I looked down. My shoulder was covered in blood.

What had... oh, right.

"It's okay!" I pulled Relena's fingers off of my shoulder. "Just a scratch."

Well, a bite really, but I didn't think that would calm her down.

"Come inside and let's call Quatre, okay?"

She let me lead her down the hallway towards the phone. I called Quatre and asked him to come and fetch our princess. I made her tell him how she had ended up on our doorstep- and was slightly amused to see him turn a light shade of pink.

I then deposited Relena on the sofa and went to go clean up. She kept turning a light shade of green whenever my shoulder caught her eye.

Underneath the bloodstained cloth was a neat mostly-healed bite mark. Sometimes the healing-fast thing was a really good thing. I pulled on a fresh shirt and wondered where Heero had gone.

Hopefully the bite had cleared his head a little and he had gone off to wait until Relena had vacated the premises.

I hoped that was what it was... a hope that grew fainter after Quatre and a squad had picked up the princess and taken her away.

Quatre had lingered on the doorstep as the squad hustled Relena towards a waiting copter.

"Heero?"

"Out in the woods."

He frowned. "Did something happen?"

I shrugged, feeling a whisper of pain in my shoulder. "Not really. He didn't like her being here- she was responsible for handing him over to the docs after all... aware of it or not."

Quatre nodded. "I see. Well, tell him I missed seeing him." He headed towards the copter, giving me one last look over his shoulder that told me he knew something more had happened- but was willing to let it go for now.

Once they were gone I went out the back and scanned the woods. Where had Heero gone? It would be dark soon... he was always home before dark...

But then dark came, and he still wasn't home...

~*~

I stood on the back porch straining to see through the darkness. Heero was out there someplace.

At least, I hoped he was. What if he had run off? Left our wood and gone elsewhere? He'd said himself he thought it would be for the best if he left me...

Damn it. I was not going to let him wander around out there alone. There were bears out there.

The practical side of my brain pointed out that Heero was more than likely a match for any bear at this point, but that wasn't the point.

I fetched my coat and a flashlight. I stuck a note on both the front and the back doors informing Heero- should he come home- that I had gone looking for him and to stay there and wait for me.

It was stupid, I know it. We lived in the middle of nowhere. Heero spent more time in the woods than I did- he knew it better than I ever could.

But I couldn't just let him go. I couldn't wait in that cabin and hope that he came back to me. It wouldn't work. I knew it wouldn't. He'd been afraid that he would hurt me, and he did- accidentally of course, but he had.

I just hoped he remembered that I needed him around. Not just because of Dr. J's threat- but maybe that would give me the advantage.

So I blundered through the woods and called his name every third step.

Even with a flashlight, the woods are not a fun place at night. Too many things to trip over and into, too many dark places to hide.

I don't know how long I was out there calling for Heero. My voice grew hoarse, my feet began to hurt and the sky was turning a soft pink when I stopped to lean against a tree for a moment.

The tree growled.

Oh shit, was the first thing that crossed my mind as I turned and backed carefully away from the tree. A bear looked back at me and I cursed softly.

"Oh shit. Look, sorry. I didn't mean to..." I began to back away and the bear started to follow me. I was pretty sure I could fight it off, but damn, this was going to really hurt.

I kept backing away, one step at a time and the bear kept following.

Then I tripped over something and fell backwards, landing on my ass. It hurt.

The bear was much closer now.

I tensed.

Something cracked on the other side of the tree and the bear's head swung around.

Heero stood there, a branch in his hand. He thwapped the tree again and the bear turned towards him.

I'm not sure what I was thinking, but I didn't want that bear going for him either.

So I jumped the bear.

I know. Stupid idea. But it just kind of happened.

There was a surprised whuff sound and for a moment I felt like I was wrapped in a big furry coat. Something scratched my arm and I heard cursing.

Then everything went dark.

~*~

I woke up in my own bed, Heero leaning over me.

For some reason he looked upset. I wondered why.

"What the hell were you thinking!" He said and I blinked at him. "Attacking that bear like that? You're lucky she only scratched you!"

"Bear?" I repeated and he looked worried. His fingers slid over my head.

"Not another concussion," he muttered and then my brain woke up.

"I had to jump the bear, she was heading for you!"

"I was trying to distract her from you! You shouldn't have been near her!"

"I was looking for you!"

That stopped him. He closed his mouth and looked ashamed. "I'm so sorry Duo. I really am. I just I hadn't..."

"Stop." I put one hand over his mouth. "I know what happened. You can't help it love. It's all right."

He kissed my fingertips and sighed. "I hurt you."

"I got in the way." I reached up and pulled him down to me. "I'm okay now. It's all right."

"I hurt you."

"And it snapped you out of it. So you bit me. I heal fast- Relena doesn't. That's why I'm here with you love. You can't really hurt me."

"I could..."

"No. The moment you did, you froze. It's all right. You aren't at fault."

He pulled me close, held me so tightly that it was hard to breathe. "I'm still sorry. I wish... I wish we could be the way we were before."

"I do too sometimes- but we have to deal with the now. And the now is much much better than it could have been."

"True." He agreed and I relaxed a little.

I waited a little bit until I felt his breathing even out again, until his arms weren't quite so tight. "I was scared you weren't coming back," I said. "That's why I went to look for you." I hoped he understood what I was trying to say.

"I'll always come back." He said and kissed me. "I promise."

Satisfied I curled up against him and closed my eyes.
