Counting Down Part 3

"Quatre?" Heero said in surprise as he approached his desk. His former partner in crime, seated comfortably at Duo's desk, grinned up at him. "What are you doing here?"

"Nice to see you too, Heero."

"Sorry," Heero apologized as he sat down and started searching through his files. "Things are a little crazy around here."

"I can tell. Where's Duo?"

Heero shrugged. "No idea. Haven't seen him since this morning. Were you supposed to meet him?" It wasn't like Duo to miss an appointment- even if they were busy.

"Not exactly. I just happened to be planet side when I got a message from him, so I thought I'd stop in. It must be bad if he's counting down towards the weekend." Quatre tapped the post its hanging from Duo's monitor and Heero frowned.

Three were left. So Duo hadn't done anything about his goal yet. It was so strange of him to put something off like that...

"Or is this not a countdown but some new nefarious scheme that involves you, Duo and Trowa?"

Heero laughed and rolled his eyes. "And get in trouble with you and Cathy again? If there is a nefarious scheme going on, I don't think Duo would involve Trowa- not after last time."

"He really should ask me," Quatre rested his chin on his hands and smiled innocently. "I'm good at nefarious."

Heero didn't argue that point. "As far as I know, Duo has some personal goal or something and he's given himself a fixed time to do it in- thus the countdown. If he doesn't make it, then he says he must not want it badly enough."

Quatre's expression cleared. "Ah," he said and gave the numbers a thoughtful look. "That explains the phone call. Duo wanted me to give him a pep talk."

"Then you know what this is all about?" Heero asked before he could help himself.

"Well, I have a fairly good idea, but I won't know for sure until I talk to Duo." Quatre got to his feet and reached across the desk to give Heero's shoulder a brief squeeze. "I'm going to try and track him down- but... he's got your support, right?"

"Of course," Heero smiled faintly back. "He's my partner. I'll support him no matter what." Even if he had no idea what exactly Duo needed the support for...

"I knew you would. Let Duo know too, okay?" Quatre winked and headed out, leaving Heero to frown at the files for a moment.

Why would Duo need his support for whatever this was? And if he did, why hadn't he already asked for it?
