It doesn't matter how long ago it's been, the nightmares never truly go away. They just waited for the opportunity to rear their ugly heads.
And rear they did, whenever we're the most vulnerable, whenever we're alone, like they knew that we'd been watching each other's backs. The minute I stepped into the house after the week I'd been away, I headed toward the bedroom. I had no intension to wake my lover; I just wanted to see him, badly.
I quietly opened the door, saw my fitfully sleeping lover tossing and turning on our king size bed. I saw that he hadn't been sleeping well with the nightmares coming back with a vengeance.
I couldn't resist and held his hand, trying to soothe the nightmares away. As if he distinctly knew that I'm back to watch over him again, he latched onto my hand and was eased back into much more peaceful sleep almost instantly.
I then surrendered to the inevitable, slipping under the blanket and falling into the deepest sleep I'd had for the week.
I'm really glad that we found each other during that maddening period in our lives, found the only safe place we would ever find in each other's arms.
