Whispered Touches Prologue

Heero dropped the last box on the floor of his new room before reaching up to ruffle his messy hair with a sigh of relief. He surveyed the room with a critical eye; it was equipped with a bathroom, bed, shelf, desk, closet, bureau and bedside table. The window had a foot and a half wide ledge and faced the backyard which was towards the west. He had arranged his shelf to fit against the wall just beside it, and knew when cushions were added to the window ledge, it would make a good comfortable spot to read and study.

Something moved into his room to settle at his feet, and he looked down and smiled.

"Hey boy." He pet the head of the young, not quite fully-grown golden Labrador that was the family pet, then turned his attention to the small hand holding onto the collar of the dog. The owner of that hand was an eighteen-month-old toddler who's other hand was by her mouth as she suckled her thumb. "Hi baby." He tried to tug the hand from her mouth. "Is your hand clean?" He asked. She blinked at him, then smiled around her thumb.

"Heero, can you give me a hand?" A voice called from down the hall.

"Coming." He left the little girl and dog, knowing the dog would keep the girl away from the stairs. He entered the master bedroom and quickly crossed the room to help his mother lift a box onto a stack of two other boxes. "Mom, you should have called for me. You could have hurt yourself."

"I know." The woman sighed. "But with your father busy at work, you've been doing a lot of the lifting already, and I thought I'd help out."

"Mom, trust me. All this lifting is not a big problem for me. When it comes to unpacking, that's your forte." He said as he massaged his mother's shoulders.

Kanoko Yuy turned to study her handsome son, who at the age of sixteen stood at a towering five feet nine over her own five foot three frame. He had inherited both her and her husband's Japanese features, but had inherited the startling prussian eyes from an odd gene on her husband's behalf. "The move was sudden, I know Heero. But your father's promotion-"

"I understand Mom." Heero said softly. "Anyway, this place is nice. Plus, I'll be in college in a couple of years, and Berkeley is a great place for my choice of major."

"I know, but to move you from all your friends-"

"Mom, it's fine, really. They're only a few hours drive away." Heero said firmly. Kanoko decided to change the topic.

"I brought Naoko up."

"She's with the dog in my room." Heero reported. "We've got to wean her from the thumb sucking."

"I know." The woman answered with a sigh. "That's the last of the boxes. I've got to get to dinner-"

"I'll make dinner tonight." Heero interrupted. "You get Naoko and take a relaxing bath, okay?"

"Are you sure?"

"Yes." Heero nodded. He was sore from the lifting, and he had things to unpack, but all could wait. He left the master bedroom with his mother to find Naoko and the dog sitting in the middle of his room.

"Naoko, let's go take a bath." The woman easily lifted the small child up.

"Come on Wing." Heero whistled to the dog. "Let's go downstairs."

Minutes later, Heero had started the rice cooker and begun to fry the chicken in the pan. He glanced over to see the dog eating from his dish; they always fed the dog first and let him out into the backyard while the family ate; at least in the summer they did. Named for the two patches of strangely white fur on his back, Wing was too busy devouring his dinner to pay attention to the chicken cooking behind him.

"You pig." Heero said affectionately, knowing that the dog would have a fun time exploring the new backyard for the first time. The sounds of kibble-devouring stopped, however, as he grabbed the utensils to set the table. He turned to see the dog staring at a chair at the dining table. "What is it boy?"

The dog's ears flicked at the sound of Heero's voice, but he had taken a couple of steps away from his dish. /What is it?/ Heero stopped moving. Wing never left his dish without good reason. The one and only time he had done that was because Naoko had stumbled and taken a fall, and had started to cry. He listened, but couldn't hear anything other than the whir of the fan above the stove and the sizzling chicken. The dog turned away from where he was staring after a moment, and returned to his dinner. Heero studied the dog a moment longer, then quickly set the table, making sure that he placed his sister's smaller and safer utensils at the head of the table where the child would sit between their mother and himself.

"Shoot." The chicken was beginning to burn, and he quickly added the teriyaki sauce as he lowered the fire and continued to cook. The sauce made the chicken smell delicious.

"Smells good."

Heero turned sharply to his left. He hadn't heard anyone approaching, and that voice did not sound at all like his mother, or anyone he knew. Naoko rarely spoke, and even if she did, she would not be a close whisper to his ear; Heero was several times the height of his baby sister.

"I must be tired." He muttered, dishing up the food. But even as he let the dog out and sat down, helping his mother feed the baby between their own bites of food, Heero couldn't shake the odd feeling at the back of his neck.
