His Vow to Me

Yesterday, I married the man I loved in front of our closest friends. We had walked down the aisle together, and I stood facing Duo, distracted by the way he looked in the custom-made tuxedo. I have to admit, thinking back, that I was hardly paying any attention to the man speaking just a couple of feet from us; I was so distracted by Duo's eyes gazing into mine as if we could hear each other's thoughts. Sometimes, maybe we can; we don't always need words between us.

"Do you, Heero Yuy, take Duo Maxwell to be your lawfully wedded husband, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health until death do you part?"

"I do."

I remember thinking that those two words may be hard to say because there was so much pledge behind them. But then, I realized at the moment I was to say them that it came easily, because with or without the ceremony I would have pledged to Duo all of the same, if not more.

"Do you, Duo Maxwell, take Heero Yuy to be your lawfully wedded husband, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health until death do you part?"

Duo's gaze had been unreadable.

"I do not."

There were gasps in the small audience, but my attention was completely on Duo. I felt confusion, shock, disbelief and uncertainty fly through me before I calmed as I focused on his face, his expression, the words he was saying mentally before he actually spoke them. Duo had a reason to speak like this and I trusted him implicitly to speak his mind as was his freedom to do so.

I remember thinking all of that in that few seconds of shock, feeling as if eternity had passed, but Duo had only paused to take a breath before he continued.

"For even in death I will seek you again, Heero Yuy. Even in death I'll find you."

I hadn't waited for anyone to speak before I simply pulled him towards me and gave my new husband a kiss to prove that I didn't doubt him.

Much later that night as he lay sated in my arms, he kissed my jaw and spoke again.

"I owe you something, don't I?"

I nuzzled my jaw against his damp hair with a sigh; a silent question of what he meant. He shifted until he had pulled my slightly unwilling body into a sitting position and he sat in my lap, our bodies pressed close. I slid my arms around his back, but he reached behind and tangled our fingers together, gripping me surely as he gazed into my eyes.

"I, Duo Maxwell, take you, Heero Yuy, to be my lawfully wedded husband, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health and beyond death; even then our hearts and souls will not part."

I squeezed him a little tighter in my arms and he returned the embrace by squeezing my fingers. We met each other halfway to seal our lips together gently and his fingers pulled away from mine to thread into my hair.

Later, I would tease him, or perhaps punish him a little for scaring me even for a few brief seconds during our wedding vows.

But for now, as our bodies pressed close again and his comfortable weight pressed me against the soft mattress and new sheets...

I could give to him, take from him, share with him, the love that will only continue to grow, perhaps even beyond death.
