Reasons to Travel Through Time
"Today is 'pretend to be a time traveler day'," Duo said as he stretched his legs out on the couch. He looked up at Heero since he was lying on Heero's chest.
"Is it?" Heero asked.
"Quatre sent me a link to prove it," Duo added. "Although it required things like dressing up and speaking words that don't exist, or pretending not to understand modern technology. Depends if you were travelling back or forwards in time."
"Hm."
"Well, it would have been fun to do, had I gotten the email earlier in the day but...I was thinking something else."
"Oh?"
"What would you do, if you could travel back or forwards in time, but in your own life? I mean, it's not what this day means, but...what if?"
"I'm not sure," Heero said. "How about you?"
Duo sighed, snuggled in Heero's arms. Tracing the back of Heero's hand, he spoke thoughtfully, "I don't think I'd want to do things...too drastic. If I went back in time I mean. Don't think I want to alter history completely...but there are things I'd want to do."
"Like?" Heero asked, breathing in the scent of Duo's hair.
"I think I'd...say a better goodbye to Solo. I understood that he was dying...I just didn't want to accept it. He didn't hear my goodbye. He was gone by then." Arms tightened around Duo, but he continued. "And the same to Sister Helen, I guess. I'd also apologize for shooting you. I didn't exactly want to, you know? I may not have known you but..."
"I know," Heero interrupted softly.
"If I went forward in time, I'd definitely play around with the new technology, assuming it existed of course," Duo said, changing the sombre mood. "I'd do it all with you," he added softly. "How about you? If you travelled back in time?"
Heero shrugged a little. "I don't know. I'd...want to go back and not have made the mistake I did in the war, not have involved civilians. But that would be changing history, right?"
"Maybe."
"I'd rather go forward in time," Heero said. "If only for one day."
"Why's that?"
"To make sure that I'd still be with you. To take note of any mistakes I may have made, and to remember them so I wouldn't actually make them." He paused, then smiled a little. "It doesn't count as changing history when technically I'd be back before it happened, right?"
Duo turned a little in Heero's arms and kissed him. "You'd make sure that I didn't make mistakes, too?" he asked against Heero's lips.
"I'd do whatever it takes to keep us together. That's my biggest mission right now, and will be for the rest of my life."
"Where did you learn to say sweet things like this?"
"From you."
"I do not."
"Do too."
"Do not, I'll prove it."
"How?" Heero asked, pushing Duo up so that he could look him in the eye. Duo grinned.
"I prefer not to say sweet things, but to do sweet things," Duo said. With that, he got up and pulled Heero up, leading him towards the bedroom.
As he closed the door behind him and watched Duo pull off his shirt, Heero smiled a little. Maybe it wasn't necessary to go to the future; all he had to do was to keep learning and understanding his lover the best he could...
Then he'd be confident that they'd make it together forever.
