The Thought That Counts

"Heero! What are you doing up so early?" Duo quickly moved a box under the counter and out of Heero's sight as his lover walked into the kitchen.

"I should be asking you that, Duo. I don't recall you being in bed last night, especially not after I thought we managed to wear each other out." Heero's eyes narrowed to the counter top, wondering what it was Duo was hiding.

"I was..."

"You were what?"

"I was...Happy Valentines Day!" Duo grinned.

"Happy Valentines Day," Heero answered, and was surprised when Duo thrust a box towards him. "What is this?"

"Open it!"

A little curious, Heero opened the box and looked at the heart-shaped chocolates. "Duo, did you make these?"

"I did," Duo looked shy. "I woke up at night to do it and had to be really quiet so I didn't wake you up. I think it helped that I packed towels at the base of the bedroom door to muffle the sound, too."

"But..." Heero didn't know how to say what he wanted to without hurting his lover's feelings.

"Aren't you going to try one?" Duo asked.

"I..." Heero's eyebrows furrowed.

"Oh come on, Heero, I tried one and it isn't that bad."

Heero looked up. "Duo, you're a horrible cook. You're a disaster in the kitchen!" he finally blurted out.

"Well, apparently not in making chocolates!" Duo plucked one from the box and held it to Heero's mouth. "Open wide," he sang.

Heero clamped his mouth shut; somehow, he didn't think that tasting the chocolate would be good for his health. Then again, defying his lover couldn't be good for his health, either.

Duo took the box away from him and turned away. "Fine," he said. "I'll throw them out if you're not going to eat them. No use in leaving them around to be eyesores."

Something caught Heero's eye and he reached quickly. "Wait," Heero said, reaching to touch Duo's arm. The next thing he knew, he was sitting on the kitchen floor with Duo straddling his legs.

He realized, not for the first time, that it was a horrible mistake to teach Duo how to unbalance a person who knew how to fight. He caught Duo's wrist just as Duo managed to push a bit of chocolate past his lips.

But Duo looked so hopeful that Heero felt himself giving in. Cautiously, he licked the chocolate, and then he allowed Duo to push it into his mouth. Still holding Duo's wrist, Heero made sure to lick any and all traces of chocolate from Duo's fingers before letting go to thoroughly taste the treat.

He reached for another, much to Duo's delight.

"Okay, you can eat the rest later," Duo said, getting up off of Heero and taking the lid from his lover's slack hand as he did so. He closed the box and put it aside before helping Heero up off the floor. "Now..." he leaned close, wrapping his arms around Heero's neck. "Happy Valentine's Day," he breathed before kissing Heero, tasting the sweet chocolate upon Heero's lips.

Heero pulled Duo close and kissed him back.

He smiled as he hugged his lover, listening to Duo talk about the restaurant he'd made reservations at for their dinner tonight. He nuzzled Duo and breathed in the scent of his lover's hair as Duo moved on to discussing their dessert that night to be had in their bed with the chocolates, or perhaps, with melted ones.

Heero decided then that he wouldn't tell his little cheater that he'd spotted some familiar chocolate foil wrappers in the propped open garbage bin.

After all, it was the thought that counted, right? The mess in the kitchen proved that Duo had, indeed, tried his very best, and failed at making chocolates. And it was a part of the thought that counted, that he'd decided not to risk Heero's health and had chosen to melt and shape Heero's favourite chocolates into hearts...

...wasn't it?
