What I See In Space

Duo set his helmet on the floor and shrugged his flightsuit down to his waist. His shoulders ached and his head hurt. He'd spent most of the day in the sims, dressed up like he would be in space to familiarize his body with the new flightsuit that Research and Development had made.

He had to give it to them; it wasn't as tight as it looked and was more comfortable than the old one.

The days of flying a Gundam were long over, but it didn't mean that Duo was no longer piloting. It didn't matter that he was piloting fighter planes instead, and mostly only in simulation. That didn't matter either; simulation meant a lack of war, and a lack of war meant no bloodshed.

Aside from the new flightsuits, R&D had also modified a fighter plane to give it a more sensitive touch. Lady Une had asked that Duo and Heero try it out and lead the training of the more seasoned pilots. He had to admit that it was almost more sensitive than Deathscythe had been, and a far cry better than any of the other mobile suits the majority of the other ex-soldiers in this program were used to piloting.

Lying down on the floor, he looked up at the ceiling. They were training up in space so that once the ideal results for training within the sims were obtained, the pilots would be doing test runs in space with the three fighter planes they had. The ceiling allowed Duo to look out into space, and the expanse of stars seemed to continue onward forever.

He heard a rustle and shifted, tilting his head back to see who it was, even though he knew that Heero was the only other person with access to this room. Heero was stripping his flightsuit down to his waist as well, and a moment later, he felt Heero lie down with his head close by and feet pointing in the opposite direction.

"Been a while since I've been in space," Duo said.

"Me too."

"What does it make you think about?" he asked curiously. "It makes me think about the war, and how I used to look at it and wonder if space was a tranquil place, or just a place that was some sort of middle ground to fight."

Heero thought for a while before answering. "Space makes me think of you."

"What?" Duo asked, twisting around onto his stomach to look at Heero. "Why?"

"I don't know," Heero said. "Maybe because of the way I've seen you pilot and it looks like you belong to the stars?"

"Is that a compliment?"

"It's just...the expression on your face makes me think that you've returned home."

"Space makes me think of you too," Duo said softly, staring at Heero's messy hair.

"Why is that?"

"Space is this...quiet place that holds a lot of secrets that are slowly being discovered, a place that looks so cold and yet houses all of this life, and...a place of beauty," Duo said softly. "And that's who you are to me. Someone who has a lot of secrets that I'm slowly discovering, someone who once looked at me with cold eyes and yet is so warm and full of life. Someone who has such a beautiful heart and a beautiful soul, no matter who or what could have tainted it in the past."

"Duo, my heart and soul are not..."

Duo moved then, crawling closer to Heero. One hand brushed by Heero's ear before fingers sank into the soft strands of hair. His other hand brushed the hair up and off of Heero's forehead and he leaned over Heero so that he could look into Heero's now-opened eyes.

"Yes, they are," Duo insisted. "They say the past is what makes you who you are now, right? Well, that's the only reason that I'm glad that you have your past. Without it, you wouldn't be with me. You wouldn't be here. Without it, you wouldn't be the way you are, always following your emotions, learning with me how to live a life without the war that stole our childhood. And maybe without it...you wouldn't look at me twice."

Heero reached up to cup Duo's cheek. "I would," he said. "No matter who I am, who I was, or who I could have been, I'm sure that I would have looked at you and fallen head over heels in love with you like I did, like I am."

Duo answered by leaning down to kiss Heero despite their awkward position, or perhaps, it was Heero's hand that guided him down.

"I love you," he mumbled against Heero's mouth.

His heart warmed when he felt Heero smile against his lips.
