Quatre's Christmas Secret

"What are you planning?" Trowa asked over a dinner of chicken carbonara sandwiches.

Quatre looked up. "What do you mean?"

"You're always planning something around the holidays," Trowa said. "What are you planning this year?"

Quatre pretend to look hurt. "You make it sound like a bad thing! If it wasn't for my planning things you wouldn't have seen my strategically misplaced letter two years ago and figured out my feelings for you."

Trowa smirked. "And saying it to my face would not have been possible?"

Quatre smirked back, nudging Trowa's foot. "Tell me you don't keep that letter and I'll admit that I should not have written it for you to see."

Trowa nodded, conceding that the letter was, indeed, still in his possession. "That doesn't explain what you are planning this year?"

"A party," Quatre answered.

"That's the usual. It doesn't count."

"What do you think I'm planning?" Quatre asked. "Is there something in particular that you want to plan?"

Trowa raised an eyebrow at Quatre, who mirrored him. "I'm just curious as to whether I should watch out for...something," he said.

Quatre grinned, letting his feet trace from Trowa's foot to his ankle and up his calf to his knee. "Okay. I'll tell you that I plan to count down the twelve days of Christmas with you...in twelve ways that involve the lube."

Trowa could feel the heat in his cheek. "You mean that?" he asked, trying to hide the warmth spreading through his body.

"Do I say things I don't mean?"

Trowa smiled. "But that's only one think you are planning, right?"

Quatre sighed. "I can't keep anything from you," he complained. "Okay. Duo...asked for my help this year. He wants to use the Christmas dinner, not the party but our usual closer-friends-only dinner to propose to Heero."

Trowa raised an eyebrow. "Really?"

"Really," Quatre nodded. "And don't tell Heero."

Trowa nodded. "I won't."

"He told me that Duo was planning to propose to you during our smaller Christmas dinner."

Heero frowned. "I had no hints from Duo at all."

"Well, he doesn't have any hints from you, right?" Trowa asked. "So why should you expect hints from him?"

"Fair enough," Heero said thoughtfully. "So if we both plan to propose to each other..."

"What do you plan to do?"

"I'll...let him propose first and then I'll say yes with a proposal of my own."

Trowa nodded. "I'll try to persuade Quatre to let me in on the plans so I can keep you updated. Just in case you and Duo end up doing the same thing."

"Thanks, Trowa."

"Trowa?"

"Hm?"

"What was that dessert you liked, that white one?"

"The meringue. Why do you ask?"

Duo grinned. "Heero liked it too."

Trowa nodded. "This is...for your proposal to Heero?"

Duo looked shocked, then resigned. "I should have known that Quatre might have told you. You won't tell?"

Trowa shook his head. "Good luck, Duo," he said, genuinely meaning it.

"Thanks, man. See you later!" The video phone was disconnected just as Quatre entered the room.

"Was that Duo?"

"Yea, he was just asking me something..."

Quatre bent, wrapping his arms around Trowa's shoulders. "So Mr. Barton, let's begin our countdown to Christmas. The bed is warm and all it's missing is you."

Trowa smiled, standing and pulling Quatre close for a kiss. He jumped when Quatre pinched his ass and laughed when he caught Quatre's other hand from repeating the gesture. Holding Quatre captive by his wrists, he lifted his arms and tugged upwards, encouraging Quatre to jump up and wrap his legs around Trowa's waist. Letting their lips meet again, Trowa walked them towards the bed.

The following days were filled with preparations for the Christmas Eve party and the Christmas dinner. Quatre was constantly on the phone with Duo, preparing for the proposal. Each detail Trowa heard, he related to Heero so that Heero could avoid doing the same thing.

Each night, Quatre made love to him, slowly, quickly, gently and roughly, stretched out on the bed or at Quatre's desk, against the door and on the floor where the moonlight lit them up.

The Christmas Eve party went by without a hitch, and as they had suspected, there was enough food left over for their dinner the next night. The only exception, Trowa learned, was that everyone's favourite dessert was accounted for so that each of them would get something they liked.

On Christmas morning, Trowa was surprised to awaken to an empty bed. He touched the sheets and found them cool, then figured that Quatre must be with Duo. They generally spent time around the estate, using the facilities, chatting or skiing outside before opening presents before the dinner.

On Duo's agenda was skiing, along with running an errand for a missing present; this would keep him from seeing Heero until it was time for presents in the early evening.

Trowa hadn't expected Quatre to spend all day with Duo, but he realized that Duo might have needed that little bit of support. Heero seemed ready for his companionship and the both of them, along with Wufei, managed to spend the day together talking, working out at the gym and reading in the library; he also managed a game of chess with Wufei although with Wufei's winning streak Trowa wasn't sure why he still bothered to try.

Duo and Quatre didn't reappear until it was time to open presents, and Trowa managed to pull Quatre close for a quick kiss. Quatre grinned at him and stood on tiptoe, nuzzling Trowa briefly before he whispered a quick 'I love you' and went back to the presents.

Gifts opened and admired, it came time to eat dinner. Conversation was kept lively by Duo and Quatre, although Trowa had to say that he couldn't tell which of the two seemed more nervous; the proposal by Duo was meant to take place at dessert time. Dinner seemed to pass by too quickly and too slowly at the same time.

Just as the dessert was brought in, however, the lights went out. Trowa stayed where he was; it was a part of the plan that Duo got up to get the cake for Heero; on the cake would be the ring and Duo would be down on his knee to propose. Quatre got up, saying something about checking the fuse and Duo, as planned, got up to go with him.

He waited there, a little anxious for the proposals on both Duo's and Heero's behalf; Trowa had even left the camera close by on the little table by the door so that he could get pictures right away.

But when the lights came on, Trowa blinked to see that he was the only one sitting at the round table.

He looked up when Quatre stepped from behind him and knelt beside him. In his hands was a heart-shaped meringue, in the middle of which sat a ring.

"Trowa," Quatre murmured softly. "Will you have me? Will you be mine?"

Trowa stared at the ring, then looked up at Quatre. Quatre was smiling warmly, but his cheeks were tinted pink.

"I had this whole speech and vow thing planned and I rehearsed it all, but...Trowa, I have no idea why I can make speeches in front of hundreds in a shareholders meeting and be so utterly speechless around you."

Trowa turned in his seat, lifting his hand so he could set it on Quatre's cheek. "Quatre..." he whispered.

"Merry Christmas, Trowa," Quatre said. "Will...I be a good enough Christmas present? No, will you be my Christmas present? I love you and...I know it doesn't have to be defined by a piece of paper and a ring but..."

"Yes," Trowa interrupted. Quatre looked stunned, as if he didn't expect it, and Trowa smiled. "Yes," he repeated. "I will marry you if you will have me, Quatre Raberba Winner." He removed the meringue and pulled Quatre up, standing as he did. Plucking the ring from atop the meringue, he pressed it into Quatre's hand. To his right, he saw his friends, with Heero holding a video camera. Duo came forward then with a matching ring that Trowa gratefully took.

He watched as Quatre put the ring onto his finger and he slid Quatre's ring on as well and refused to let go of the hand. "You're mine for eternity," he whispered.

Quatre smiled, reaching up to his own collar.

"You own my heart and soul," he said. Then, he pulled down the collar of his shirt, exposing his left chest.

And there, above his heart, was Trowa's name in Arabic, one of the few words that he could read in that language.

"Merry Christmas, love," Quatre said.

Later on, Trowa would review the video with his lover and laugh over how he had fallen for the whole scheme strategically planned by Quatre, from Duo's proposal to Heero's, from getting the both of them involved to keep him from knowing.

Later on, he would laugh over how he had tweaked the day and the logistics of the proposal at the dinner table unknowingly for his own lover to propose to him, and wonder how he had missed Heero and Wufei leaving the table, too.

Later on, he would laugh and point out to Quatre that he had looked adorably flustered when he had forgotten the vows he had planned on saying, and then he would laugh at the way he, himself, had looked so stunned when the lights came on and Quatre knelt beside him.

But at that moment, Trowa simply pressed his palm over the tattoo and Quatre's heart, and kissed his new fianc¨¦ amidst the happy cheering, clapping and well wishes of his oldest and closest friends.
