The First Meeting
What was one's expectation supposed to be upon visiting one's boyfriend's home for the very first time?
Coffee. A movie. Sitting closely together on the couch, or maybe doing more than just sitting closely. Chatting, listening to music, maybe some making out.
Those were the ideas Heero had in mind when Duo invited him over after the dinner that marked their forth official date.
Granted, they had known each other for a long time, but somehow, meeting at their homes had been rare. More often than not, they'd gone out for dinner, to the movies, to the gym or the pool hall; the point was, he'd only been inside Duo's home a handful of times, and had never stayed long.
Now, he stood in Duo's kitchen, leaning against the counter as Duo made coffee. Heero's stance appeared casual, but he was, in reality, quite tense. He stared at Duo's feet, where a bundle of fur was weaving figure eights around Duo's ankles. If he strained a little, Heero could hear some purring. When he looked carefully, he caught glimpses of wary eyes looking up at him while the cat rubbed its cheek against Duo's jeans.
Didn't cats mark their territories in that manner?
"Heero?"
Heero looked up again to see Duo's amused expression. "Just ignore her. Or if you want, I can put her into the bedroom."
"It's fine," Heero answered. He wasn't about to be chased away from Duo's home by his cat!
He followed Duo's lead out of the kitchen and stumbled as he tried to avoid stepping on the cat. She turned around to look at him. Was it his imagination or was that a dirty look he'd just received?
"Have a seat," Duo said, gesturing to the couch. Before Heero could sit down, the cat materialized in the spot Duo was patting. She didn't sit, Heero noticed; she stretched out on her back and occupied much more space than he'd thought possible for a cat.
"Um..."
"Hope!" Duo pet the cat and picked her up before setting her down on the floor. Heero cautiously made his way over and sat down beside Duo. "Don't worry, she won't bite or claw. She's just a little wary of guests."
"I see." Heero had barely spoken before the cat leapt at him. He stiffed, instinct telling him to avoid the threat. But he could handle this, right? It was just a cat. Whiskers twitched in front of him as Hope sniffed Heero curiously, stretching up towards his face.
Duo's hand casually intercepted the curious muzzle and he leaned towards the cat. "No."
Hope's answer was to walk over to Duo's lap where she settled down. Duo's hand automatically moved to pet her.
"Weird," Duo said. "She's not usually a lap kitty."
If Heero were to guess what was happening, he'd guess that Hope was staking her claim on Duo and telling him that he was not welcome in their home.
But he wasn't about to let a cat tell him whom he could or could not date. Hesitantly, he reached forward and gently took a paw.
"Hi," he murmured. "I'm Heero. Nice to meet you."
"Um, Heero?"
Heero looked at his boyfriend, noticing the amused expression once again. "What? I'm introducing myself to your housemate," he said defensively.
Duo simply grinned. Heero turned his attention back to the cat; she was sniffing his hand curiously. He held still, and to his surprise, she began to rub her cheek against his palm. Slowly, he began to scratch the spot between her ears like he'd seen Duo do. Silence reigned for a couple of minutes before Hope got up and walked over Heero's lap, her tail tickling his chin. Then, she hopped off the couch and wandered away.
Heero turned back to Duo, his eyebrow raised. "I feel like interrogation is over. That, or I've met your parent or something."
Duo laughed. "Well, what do you think the results are?"
"Good?" Heero guessed. "What do you think?"
"Definitely good." Duo's head tilted just a little. "Do you know why I covered her muzzle when she was sniffing at you?"
"No." Heero's eyes darted down to Duo's lips before meeting his eyes again. "Why?"
Duo's lips twitched in an almost grin. "I couldn't let my cat kiss my boyfriend before I got the chance to, right?" With that, Duo leaned closer and slowly kissed Heero.
They ended up making out for a good while on Duo's couch, until Heero had leaned back and taken most of Duo's weight above him. He gently stroked Duo's braid when they came up for air, and was surprised when Duo chuckled.
"What?"
"I think you're going to be really good with Hope."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because you do the absent-minded-petting really well." Duo gave Heero another quick kiss. "Speaking of Hope, I'm surprised she hasn't come back to bother us."
"Why would she?"
Duo grinned. "Didn't you know? Cats are notorious for getting between humans at the most inappropriate times."
Heero smirked. "Is that your way of telling me that I should take advantage of not being interrupted right now?" Without waiting for an answer, Heero pulled Duo down again.
In the kitchen, Hope cleaned her face, her ears twitching at the sounds from the couch. If the humans thought she would steer clear of them, they were wrong.
But Hope was a smart kitty, and she knew it wouldn't do to scare off the new human on his first visit. She stretched and lay down in the kitchen, yawning and closing her eyes. If she played things right, she'd have another human pet at her every beck and call. For now, she'd patiently wait and lull them into the false impression of kitty-proof intimacy.
