Discovering Discoverables

Heero asked him to pick a place to spend their day off and Duo chose, without hesitation, the aquarium about an hour's drive away.

He didn't mind driving, and he spent the time chatting with Heero about mindless things. Anything that wasn't work related, war related or peace related. Neither of them minded their jobs as Preventers but both had agreed not to discuss cases outside of work.

The last time they had shared a day off, Heero had picked the place and they'd ended up going to a beach. There, they'd discussed with each other their first arrival to Earth. It was partially what prompted Duo's choice to visit the aquarium.

When they stepped in, Duo was immediately mesmerized by what he saw. The size of the fish, the variety, all swimming around and around, in schools or by themselves, some curiously swimming by the glass, others not caring for their audience - Duo wanted to study it all.

"Can you believe it?" Duo had whispered.

"Believe what?"

"Creation." Duo gestured, not taking his eyes off of the large display. "Humans think they are so...so awesome. Advancing technology, living conveniently, leaving Earth, even." He looked at Heero. "But beyond us, living so closely to us, is another world existing underwater."

"It's no different than the other wildlife around us," Heero said.

"But..." Duo sighed. "Somehow it is. I don't quite know how to explain it, 'Ro. Somehow this seems different. Think of the creatures living in the depths that no human has yet managed to venture into!" He pressed closer to the glass. "Think of the secrets that humans think they know, or think they can learn, secrets that will possibly never be known to us."

"Well," Heero stepped closer. "I used to think that I would never understand the enigma that was Duo Maxwell," he said, tugging affectionately on Duo's braid. "I used to think that you'd have secrets that I'd never know-"

"Hey! Who says I don't?" Duo huffed.

Heero raised his eyebrow. "Remember the last time you tried to keep a secret?"

Duo did. Heero had discovered his weakest moment where he would still be surprisingly lucid; on the brink of orgasm. He tried a different tactic.

"Maybe I happen to like what happened the last time you tried to pry a secret from me."

Heero snorted. "I think you enjoyed it very much."

"As if you didn't."

"I didn't say that." Heero smiled as Duo slipped an arm around his waist, thumb hooking into his belt loop. "But honestly. I used to think that I'd never get the chance to know you."

"And I used to think the same," Duo said. "But that's not to say that I know all of you, and that you know all of me. I mean, what fun is there when there aren't some little secrets to be kept and discovered?" Duo glanced at the child that ran up beside him, waiting until the boy had run further down the hall. "For example...I still believe that you have a more sensitive spot than that one I discovered...and exploited...last week."

Heero chuckled. "Well our secrets aside, haven't you heard that three weeks ago they managed to find the sea floor via a compact submarine and camera? Maybe things won't be so secret after all."

"Really? Damn, that case we were on put me behind in the news. And hey, you left me rambling about all of that when you knew they had found the sea floor!"

Heero nuzzled Duo for a brief moment. "Why don't we think of it as a good omen to our figuring out the secrets to a good life together?"

Duo returned the brief nuzzle, leaning close to whisper into Heero's ear. "Why not? We'll start tonight, so I can find the next sensitive spot to exploit."

Heero grinned. "I can't wait."
