Mission Confession
Heero blinked his eyes open and focused on the digital clock. Reaching out from the cocoon of his warm blankets, he hit the alarm button before it went off.
"Six twenty-eight am," the clock said in response. Heero stretched languidly, but he still felt tired. No doubt why; he'd been sleeping restlessly the night before, his dreams assaulted by his task for the day. Today, he would tell Duo. He would tell Duo what had been on his mind for a very long time.
He would tell Duo how much he loved him.
Switching on the television to check out the headline news, Heero sighed as the news anchor greeted him with a Merry Christmas.
/Merry Christmas indeed,/ he thought. /Duo will be the deciding factor to whether Christmas will be enjoyable this year, or not./
Following through with his morning routine, Heero dressed in a tracksuit and pulled a jacket on top before he picked up his duffle bag, grabbed an apple and left his apartment. The drive to Preventers headquarters lasted only fifteen minutes. Heero entered the gym and before long he was jogging on a treadmill as was his morning routine. He tried to clear his head, but the task that had to be done today was running itself over and over in his mind.
"Hey, Heero." A man joined him on the next treadmill.
"Good morning, Duo," Heero replied. He opened his mouth to say more, but he noticed that Duo had headphones on and probably couldn't hear him anyway. Sure enough, when Heero concentrated he could hear the music coming from the headphones. He decided not to deviate from his normal routine and left the treadmill to lift some weights.
It was almost eight o'clock when Heero had showered. Just as he was checking that he had everything and that his Preventers uniform was on neatly, Duo breezed by again.
"Get moving, Yuy!" Duo ruffled Heero's hair.
"Hey Duo-" Heero began.
"Oi! Hold that elevator!" Duo ran towards the open doors. Heero sighed and ran his hand through his hair again before he grabbed his duffle bag and made his way to the office via the stairs.
By the time Heero returned to his office after lunch, he was seething in annoyance. Including the two times Duo had brushed by him earlier in the morning, the braided man had dashed off a total of five more times before Heero could even hint that he had something he wanted to say. Lunch had taken place as a mini-party in the lunch room, courtesy of the Preventers organization. Though Heero joined the lunch, he decided against saying anything to Duo in front of all of their other colleagues.
Not that Duo gave him a choice in the matter; he was busy bouncing around greeting everyone with a Merry Christmas.
Heero dropped his folder extra hard on his desk. Duo had not wished *him* a Merry Christmas yet. Sighing, Heero sat down and looked over the files in his in-tray. He was determined, however, that he would complete his mission today.
At three-pm, Heero decided to grab a coffee from the pantry to see if he'd be able to catch Duo. He hadn't managed on the two washroom breaks he'd taken.
"Hey, Duo!" He snagged the man by the braid as Duo jogged past him, his nose in a folder. Duo stepped back reflexively even though Heero let go right away; he had no intention of hurting Duo.
"Oi, watch it with the braid!" Duo said good-naturedly; Heero had never really hurt him by pulling his braid. "What's up? Going to the Christmas dinner with the guys tonight?"
"Depends," Heero answered. "Listen-"
"Hey Wuffers!" Duo waved down the hall. "I got the file-" He turned back to Heero. "Sorry man. Gotta catch you later. Hope to see you tonight!" With that, Duo ran down the hallway, still calling to Wufei.
Heero sighed as he returned to his office, no longer in the mood for coffee. Still, he was determined.
At six pm, Heero was on Quatre and Trowa's front porch, ringing the doorbell.
"Heero, Merry Christmas!" Trowa greeted the Japanese man. He blinked. "You don't look too pleased."
"Somewhat rough day at work," Heero answered.
"Rough day? For Heero?" Quatre appeared by Trowa's side. Heero sighed inwardly; he had been hoping that he would arrive at this house with Duo by his side as well. Unfortunately...
"Merry Christmas, Quatre," Heero said instead as he entered the warm house. "Even though you technically don't celebrate it, being Muslim and all."
"I celebrate the commercial holiday of Christmas, not the religious one!" Quatre laughed. "Come, have a seat. Wufei's here, but Duo's running a little bit late."
Heero noticed as he entered the living room that there was a green something at the top of the door. He'd noticed something similar at work above the pantry door, but hadn't bothered to ask about it.
"What's that?" he asked.
"Mistletoe." Quatre grabbed Trowa's arm. "They say if you kiss your special someone under a piece of mistletoe, it's a promise of happiness and long life." With that, Quatre boldly kissed Trowa.
Wufei scoffed. "They've been doing that every time they pass by that doorway," he explained when Heero raised an eyebrow.
Heero nodded in understanding as he shrugged off his jacket, placing it into the closet across the hall from the living room door before sitting down next to Wufei on the couch. The Christmas tree was large and beautifully decorated. Heero took a few minutes to admire it.
"Washroom break." Wufei wandered off, dropping the book that he had been reading onto the coffee table. Quatre had wandered back into the kitchen to check on the food when the doorbell rang again.
"Must be Duo." Trowa stood to get the door. Heero stood, a new plan forming in his head. Quatre jogged by a moment later to greet Duo at the door.
A couple of minutes later, Duo was laughing as he shrugged off his jacket, teasing Quatre and Trowa about the matching aprons they had on.
"Come on, Trowa! The turkey should be done!" Snagging his boyfriend's hand, Quatre pulled Trowa into the kitchen. Duo chuckled and opened the door, grasping for a hanger as he watched the lovers disappear around the corner. Then he gasped as hand reached out and grabbed him by the collar, hauling him into the closet. The door was slammed shut.
"Oi!" Duo stumbled as he was pushed against the inner wall of the closet, but he recognized the touch. A moment later, the light was switched on. Duo blinked to see Heero glaring at him. "Yo, Heero." Duo swallowed. "What was that for?"
"I've been waiting to talk to you all day."
"Um, we work together. You could have spoken to me at work-"
"I tried, if you hadn't noticed."
Duo blinked, and chuckled. "You know there's email and an internal phone system-"
"I wanted to talk face to face. You've been avoiding me."
"Okay, you've got me. What's up?" Duo straightened a little, then decided against it as a couple of hangers knocked against his forehead.
"Merry Christmas for starters," Heero began.
"Merry Christmas to you too, though I didn't want to be saying that in a closet," Duo chuckled. Heero took a moment to gather his nerve.
"I wanted to tell you...I like you, Duo!" Heero blurted out, averting his eyes at his blunt confession. Not that he had planned it any other way, but a sudden bubble of shyness welled within him.
Duo burst out laughing and Heero's head shot up, eyebrows raised in surprise. Duo was laughing at him? He turned to grab the doorknob to leave.
"Oi, wait a moment." Duo pulled him back around. "I didn't mean to laugh. Okay, I did, but not at you. I'm laughing at myself."
"What?" Heero asked, confused.
"I've been avoiding you all day, I admit it. Because... I've been meaning to tell you the same thing too. Today too, in fact. You just beat me to the punch."
"But...why have you been avoiding me all day? I saw you at the treadmills. We could have talked right there!" Heero's head tilted slightly in confusion.
"Something was missing. Something is missing here too, but there was no choice."
"What's missing?"
"There was something added to headquarters today, aside from those Christmas decorations."
Heero thought for a moment.
"Above the pantry door," Duo said softly. "Think of it? I wanted that somewhere close by when I told you, but whenever you tried to talk to me today, we were nowhere near the-"
Duo was rudely cut off as Heero pushed him back against the wall again, his right hand sliding around to the back of Duo's neck as he leaned forward to steal a gentle kiss.
"Mm," Duo hummed in appreciation even as Heero pulled back a moment later.
"Look up, Duo," Heero said softly.
Duo opened his eyes and looked up, his eyes following Heero's raised left arm. He smiled to see Heero holding up sprig of mistletoe above their heads.
"Merry Christmas, Duo," Heero murmured, leaning forward to steal another kiss.
Duo's hand followed Heero's arm until he was holding the mistletoe too.
"Merry Christmas, Heero," Duo replied as he met Heero halfway.
Dimly, both of them heard Quatre's indignant voice.
"Who stole the mistletoe?!"
But neither of them cared.
