The Book

There was a book that they kept as a mutual diary of sorts. It had been Duo's suggestion to start with and they kept it in the second drawer by Heero's side of the bed. The only rule had been for them to write down anything that they thought was important enough to merit documentation.

This one was, by no means, their first book. Standing at the shelf in their bedroom, Duo reached out and touched the spine of the first book, lined up against several others. He remembered the first entry he'd written, documenting what the book was for, and wondering how long it would last. Wondering if they would keep up with it, or just give it up. He remembered Heero's first entry, written like a mission report, about moving in together.

As the time had passed, their writing had become more concise, more comfortable, and served as messages for each other or reminders to themselves. And every once in a while, the both of them would pick a book and sit together to read it, or to flip through the mementos attached within it.

The shower was still running, so Duo returned to the bed, lying on his stomach in Heero's warm spot. Taking the book out, he picked up one of the pens that Heero kept by the notepad and the phone and flipped the book open, writing his thoughts within.

A look in the fridge and the freezer told me that you were planning to cook a special dinner tonight, just like you've done on this day for the past nine years.

And a look in any of our books would show an entry that one of us wrote about this day, and it would only be right to continue this tradition.

Sometimes, Heero, I think that we've come such a long way. And sometimes, I think that it's nothing compared to what we have in our future.

But the one thing I know for sure is...

Duo looked up as Heero knelt down next to him; his eyes were scanning the new words, his hand resting on Duo's forearm.

Duo couldn't help but lean over to kiss Heero's forehead. Heero looked at him and smiled, leaning close to kiss Duo on the lips before taking the pen from him.

Later, when they looked back at it, they would be able to tell who wrote which of the words because of their distinct script. But regardless, the both of them knew that the words Heero wrote echoed their mutual thoughts.

...that I will never fall out of love with you.
