Incoming Message Part 6
"Yuy! Maxwell! Une wants the two of you in her office NOW!" Wufei shook his head at the pair. Although they didn't do anything embarrassing in the workplace, they were blatantly obvious in their relationship. Duo had started bringing lunch with him and it didn't take a genius to notice that the two of them arrived and left at the same times. It hadn't escaped his notice, nor Quatre's or Trowa's, that Duo and Heero seemed happier and more at peace with themselves.
Duo rolled his eyes. "Betcha ANYTHING that Relena is trying to get me canned."
Heero smirked. "No bet. I saw her limo pull up when I glanced out the window." He stood up and waited for Duo. "I'm actually curious to find out if she did go to Une with her reason."
Duo chuckled as he left the office area.

Une's voice was obviously in a tone of forced patience. "Now... let me get this straight. You're saying I should terminate Maxwell's status in the Preventers because he's now dating Heero, who was your fiancé?"
Duo snorted and covered his mouth. He couldn't BELIEVE that Relena had ACTUALLY used that reason.
Heero shook his head as they approached.
Relena sounded calm and confident. "That's right."
Une's sigh reached their ears. "Miss Relena... do you have ANY idea how ridiculous that sounds? I can't fire Duo JUST because he stole your boyfriend!"
Heero's rich laughter echoed in the hallway. It wasn't the manic laughter that he'd had during the war. It was warm and full of true mirth. It was a sign that Duo had started to rub off on him.
Duo smiled softly at the sound. Again... it was calmer and less manic than the smiles he'd put on in order to convince everyone he was happy. There was no longer the need to pretend.
Une smiled at the couple as they entered the room. She was glad that they had found each other. They had both been on the road to self-destruction in very different ways. Then Heero had called in saying he and Duo were taking a vacation together. When they returned, it was as if the Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell she had known until then had both died and in their places... were these two brilliant young men. "Come in, both of you. Let's see what we can do to remedy this situation."
Relena spun and glared at Duo before smiling at Heero. "We can remedy this situation by having Heero leave Duo and come back to me."
Heero chuckled softly. "Relena... you don't love me."
Relena turned white and then scarlet. "I DO SO!"
Duo, once again, remained silent. This was Heero's fight.
"No you don't. If you loved me, as Duo does, you would be willing to give me up to see me happy. Or does my happiness not matter to you?" He sighed and wrapped an arm around Duo's waist. "I love Duo and Duo loves me. He was willing to watch me spend my life with you as long as he thought I was happy. He was willing to stay quiet. He actually asked if I was happy. He still asks and he still makes me happy."
Duo blushed a little and smiled at Heero. "You are such a poet when you want to be."
Relena opened and closed her mouth a few times as she looked at the two of them. They were so beautiful together... it was almost criminal to even look at them and see the love they had for each other. It hit her like a wave... she had lost Heero. She had lost him when she had never really had him in the first place.
Heero saw Relena getting a lost look and knelt beside where she was sitting. "Relena... we can be friends. Really we can... if you want to be."
Relena's eyes snapped to Heero and she saw all the little changes. The softness in his eyes... the new sparkle in his face that spoke of joy and peace. She had never seen it before. And he was so open in this offer of friendship. Her eyes filled with tears and she bit back a sob as she rose and walked swiftly out of the room... pausing only to look at Duo. What she saw in him only made her feel worse. There was a genuine understanding there and a silent offer of friendship if she wanted it. She couldn't stand anymore and picked up her pace.
Une smiled gently at the couple. "I think you two should go home for now. Nothing much is happening here, and if something DID happen, both of you are too distracted. I'll see you two tomorrow." She watched as Duo reached out and helped Heero stand from where he was still kneeling by the chair Relena had occupied. When they were gone, she sighed. Each gave and took so much from the other. She could only hope that Relena would see how much those two meant to one another.

~~3 Months Later~~
"KANPAI!!!" People cheered as Duo and Heero exchanged vows and rings in the great room of their house. It wasn't a large gathering. Just a few of their friends.
They had bought the house they had been renting... they had decided it was perfect for them. Spacious enough for each of them to have their own space, but there were signs everywhere of their new life together.
Duo laughed as Heero spun him around in a circle. Then he caught sight of a familiar face lurking in the shadows and watching as if she were an outsider. Duo grabbed Heero's hand and dragged him over to where the blonde was standing. "We were afraid you wouldn't show!"
Relena smiled shyly at Duo. "I was... shocked that you invited me. I... I wasn't going to invite YOU when... Thank you."
Duo shrugged. "No big thing. It's what friends do, right?"
Relena's smile wavered a little as she nodded. "Yes... friends."
Heero nodded as well. "We're both glad that you could come, Relena." He offered her a champagne flute. "Please... join us in a toast!"
Relena accepted the flute and raised it. "To the two of you... the best friends a girl could ask for. For not... sucking up to me and for telling me what I needed to hear even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear."
Duo and Heero laughed as they raised their glasses to clink with hers. "Hear hear!" After they finished drinking their champagne, the other guests started applauding.
