Ficlet of Thanksgivingness
I'm really not one for generalities under normal circumstances, but I have to admit that the first thing that crossed my mind that day was, 'women are not very observant'. Though, I would also like to point out that while I sipped my coffee and watched Yuy glare daggers at Noin's back, I did amend that to 'people are not very observant'.
I have come to the conclusion over the years, that our Gundam pilot training seems to have given the five of us an edge in the body language and 'clue' department that most people just don't seem to have.
Or maybe they just don't bother to exercise it. I knew the minute the woman opened her mouth in front of Yuy and said, 'I just do not get that damn Maxwell sometimes!' that she was treading on dangerous ground.
I took my coffee and retreated to the other side of the break room and watched it play out.
'Pardon me?' Yuy said in a deceptively quiet tone that went right over Noin's head.
'I was just talking to him down by the water cooler and the man had the nerve to tell me that he 'didn't get this Thanksgiving thing'!' she groused as she poured her own mug full and mixed enough sugar in it that I wondered why she didn't just buy a soda out of the vending machine.
The look on Yuy's face changed subtly and I wanted to say that he almost looked amused. He didn't have to prompt her, Noin was obviously irritated by the perceived slight to her holiday and continued to complain.
'How can anyone not 'get Thanksgiving'? That's like... like... not getting Christmas!' she said, stirring her coffee concoction almost viciously. 'It's the most insensitive thing I've ever heard!'
Yuy actually snorted, though I don't think she noticed. She was muttering about men in general and a lack of thoughtfulness, when the man in question appeared in the doorway to the break room. He was chatting with one of the security guards as they came in, and that's probably what kept him from hearing Noin's comments. Yuy unfolded himself from where he'd been leaning against the counter and went to meet him.
'There you are, Heero,' Maxwell smiled, brandishing a sack. 'I thought you were going to wait for me?'
'I came on up to make sure we had a table,' Yuy told him and they both came to sit down not far from where I was standing.
'Hey, Wufei,' Maxwell greeted. 'Another poor soul consigned to work on the holiday, huh?'
I nodded, one eye on Noin as she managed to look chagrined at how close she had come to getting caught talking about one of her co-workers. Though she still muttered something under her breath as she went to the refrigerator to retrieve her own lunch.
Maxwell had sat and was busy doling out his and Yuy's lunch. 'I made turkey sandwiches,' he said doubtfully. 'That's the tradition... right?'
Yuy smiled as he accepted his wrapped sandwich. 'Close enough,' he told his partner, and then his smile got a bit of an edge to it. 'So, Duo, I'm told that you just don't 'get' this whole Thanksgiving holiday?'
Maxwell didn't seem to notice that Noin dropped her lunch, but Yuy did, and that smile escalated another notch. I sipped my coffee to cover the smirk.
'Not really,' Maxwell sighed, unwrapping his own sandwich and then he suddenly glanced up at me. 'Hey, Wufei... forget to pack something? I've got more than enough here if you'd like to share?'
On another day, I might have declined, but the irony didn't escape me and I pulled out a chair to sit with them. 'Thank you; that would be nice.'
Maxwell gave me that wide smile he has, and proceeded to divide his sandwich in half. Noin sat down a bit further up the table.
'So just what is it you don't get about Thanksgiving?' Yuy prompted gently, cutting his own apple in half to share with me.
Maxwell gave him a look that came across as a little sheepish. 'I guess I just don't understand the notion of setting aside a day to be thankful,' he said. 'Shouldn't you be thankful all year round?'
Yuy smiled that bemused little smile again but continued to play Devil's advocate for Noin's benefit. 'Well, I guess some people just need to be reminded to be thankful.'
Maxwell gave him a quizzical, wrinkle-nosed look. 'How in the hell could you forget to be thankful?' he asked, his tone totally guileless. 'If you love someone, are you only glad of that once a year? If you have a home, are you only grateful once a year? If you have friends, do you only remember them once a year? That's just... nuts.'
Somewhere down the table from us, there was an odd little noise. Yuy looked supremely pleased with himself.
'You make a very good point,' I interjected, taking a bite of my half of the sandwich. 'And a very good sandwich.'
Maxwell lost the puzzled look and grinned at me. Then Yuy opened the can of juice that had been in the sack with their lunch, taking a swallow before handing it across to Maxwell. 'Oh man,' Maxwell suddenly said. 'I'm sorry Wufei... we only packed our can this morning.'
I smiled, wondering at Yuy's skills at leading his partner to make his points for him. 'That's all right, I have coffee.'
There was another strange noise from down the table, and I finally allowed myself a glance in that direction. Noin couldn't seem to decide if she wanted to look ashamed or agog. I refrained from asking her just who wasn't 'getting it'.
People really are not very observant... about a lot of things.
