A War Worth Fighting Prologue
He had lost track of how many days he had been sealed away in that black box, only large enough for him to curl in on himself in a fetal position. Other than the occasional times that he was removed to relieve himself, drink and eat he had no exposure to the outside world.
Why the hell had he not been killed along with his friends and brothers on the beaches of Leyte of the Philippines. He had seen so many of them fall to the mercy of a hail of bullets and showers of grenades and bombs that his stomach churned every time he envisioned their warped, bleeding corpses on the ground.
And yet he had been found by the Japanese enemy when the last of his weapon resources had run out and the last of his allies for miles were decomposing around him. Instead of killing him as he had expected, the swarm moved in and took him. He fought them off as best he could with nothing more than a pocket knife left at his disposal. Eventually, however, their numbers overwhelmed them.
This... this caged life was far worse than any hell he had experienced on the battlefields.
In the back of his mind, he envisioned his mother back home in the 'States'. No doubt she was worried to death over him. She had been ever since he signed to join the army at the start of what was now known as the second World War. He dreaded what she would go through in learning that her only child was missing- most likely a prisoner.
War was a horrific thing. It left mothers and fathers without children. Wives without husbands. Children without fathers.
But it was necessary. That was the bitch of it all. Sometimes there were moments when a person had to fight and die for what they believed in when it was threatened.
He had been willing to die for everything that his nation stood for.
Not only had he failed in that, but he was at the mercy of the same soldiers that he had been sent to kill during the 'island hopping' strategy laid out to the United States military.
All that he knew was the boat that he was being carried on and the box that he had lived in for what had to have been more than a few days.
Lost in his despair and fear, he heard the latch to his prison being unhitched. The lid was lifted and blinding light from the cell poured inside, blinding him. Wincing at the offensive brightness, he was too weak to fight off the hands that reached in and grabbed him from under either arm to hoist him up and out of the box.
Onto wobbly legs he was lowered and his captors spoke to one another in their native tongue. Most of it he could understand thanks to his brushing up on Japanese when he learned where he was to be deployed.
Unlike any other time before, he was led- half carried- from the cell and out onto the massive boat deck of the carrier. The natural light from the sun pierced his eyes and he held back a sharp cry of pain at the exposure. His grungy, forest green uniform clashed with all of the well-tailored and pristine white uniforms of the Japanese soldiers gathered around.
Violet eyes squinted as they tried to see past the agony, he spotted a shoreline just in the distance that they were approaching quickly. His heart hammering in his ears, a small gasp escaped him and his skin paled in realization of what he was looking at.
The soldier at his right turned to face him and smirked. "Welcome to Japan," he spoke in English and with a not-too-kind tone to his voice.
Japan. He had been brought from the Philippines to the very heart of enemy territory.
Swallowing a few times to dampen his throat, all that Duo could manage was one breathed...
"Fuck."
