A War Worth Fighting Epilogue

Duo sighed deeply as he stirred awake to find himself in his lover's arms. Smiling when his blinking violet eyes focused on the peaceful, sleeping face of the former sergeant, he snuggled their nude bodies closer under the covers and rested his head on the shoulder that had been his pillow through the night.

Over the months following the arrival of Heero and his family to the Maxwell estate, they had gone on to explain how they managed to escape Hiroshima unharmed. Following her most unpleasant visit from a pair of Japanese army men, Sylvia had contacted her father in the city of Osaka. Slipping away that same night before any guards were sent to guard the area, she made a harrowing journey of her own to stay with him.

When Heero had finally reached Hiroshima and found that he could not simply walk in, he decided to backtrack and see his grandfather to ask for his assistance. Much to his shock, he found that his mother was already there when he arrived. From there, it was a simple matter of them traveling together up to the northern reaches of the mainland where Howard collected them as soon as he was contacted.

Shuddering to himself over what still could have been, Duo willed away those dark thoughts and once again thanked the Deity above for not allowing that to happen.

After their settling in, Sylvia and Odin were living in a home of their own built on the wide stretches of land of the Maxwell estate. More family than neighbors, they spent a great deal of time with Lady Une, Zechs and Dorothy while becoming accustomed to their new lives back in the States.

At the slight tremor that shook his partner, Heero's cobalt eyes blinked open. Turning his own head to meet the violet gaze on him, he asked in a tired voice, "Are you all right?"

The veteran smoothed back his loose, long hair and nodded, "Yea." Wrapping himself even closer, he grinned, "Everything's perfect."

Lightly chuckling, the ex-sergeant and recently sworn in American citizen, brushed back his lover's bangs to kiss his forehead. Glancing at the clock on the wall, he acknowledged, "Class is going to be starting in about an hour. We still have time to make it to the cafeteria if we get dressed now."

Their dorm room at the elite engineering school that they were attending was warm against the snow that was drifting outside. In the air, there was still a hint of their lovemaking from the night before.

When they graduated in three years, the pair looked forward to starting their own business much like the Sweepers in Japan had. Whenever they wished to, they could be able to make 'business trips' by going back to Japan to see them. That way Heero would also be reunited with his homeland from time to time.

Hungry as he was, Duo frowned at the thought of their having to be separated. Biting his lip, he requested, "Can we just stay here like this before we have to go to class?"

Smiling at that, Heero wound himself as tightly as he could around his other half. Lightly kissing Maxwell's lips, he whispered, "We can stay here like this." He was rewarded with a brilliant grin and a deep kiss in response.

It was a war that had brought them together by chance when they should have been at odds with each other. That same war had torn them apart once soon after.

Now, in this new world of awareness and progress, they vowed that never again were they going to be separated.
