By the Red Moon Prologue

Behind his closed eyelids, he could see the room before him flickering with the light of a candle. At the sound of footsteps approaching, rustling the thick hay of the stable beneath them, he was alert. Feigning sleep, he slightly tightened his hand that always rested on the hilt of his sword even in slumber. He kept his breath even while preparing to take his unexpected visitor by surprise if they meant harm.

Then, the person nearing whispered, "Heero. Heero, wake up."

Recognizing his mentor's voice, the young rider's cobalt eyes snapped open.

Quickly sitting up, he was surprised to find the tall man standing before him with a baby wrapped in a while blanket, sleeping in a strong arm while the other carried a glowing lantern. The grave expression on his teacher's face and the jagged tears in his red tunic that revealed bleeding cuts beneath was enough to make it known that something was very wrong in the world.

Heero was on his feet and brushing the straw from his deep blue tunic and high brown boots that nearly covered his black pants. Frowning as he looked from the child's face and up again, he asked urgently, "What is it, Odin?" Behind him, he could hear the shifting of Wing in his closed off stall.

"The King and Queen are dead," came the solemn answer.

Eyes widening, the rider gasped sharply. Keeping his voice low, knowing that the forest around the stable had ears, he breathed, "What? But, that cannot be."

Odin nodded firmly and whispered, "It is just as the prophecy foretold. I was there, in the castle, when the first attacks of Dekim's army came. For the last two days, I have been riding as hard as I could through the forest on horse where the trail is not well known by the attackers so that I could return here." The baby in his arm cooed in his sleep and sighed.

Biting his lip, Heero gazed on the little one and breathed, "Then... this is..."

His mentor took a deep breath and answered, "The young prince. He was given to me by the Queen with the plea to keep him safe just before the castle walls fell to the attack. I did what I could to help, but I had to look after the child. Fortunately, I was able to find enough supplies for him for his journey to the portal."

And that only meant one thing for Heero, he was all too aware. The prince would need to be carried out of their realm as quickly as possible for his protection. If the castle of the Sanq Kingdom, only a few days of travel away was falling, it would only be a matter of time before the aggressors reached the outskirts where he and the other knights in training lived.

Taking a deep breath, the young man nodded firmly, "I will take him on Wing. We will be able to reach the portal in days as opposed to over a week by other means of travel."

With a proud grin tugging the side of his mouth, Odin appraised his best pupil. He knew he had done the right thing by choosing the boy for this dangerous mission.

Carefully slipping the baby into Heero's arms, the tall man informed, "I will go get the supplies from my horse and alert the squires to assist you in saddling Wing." That said, he turned on his heels and ran through the stable's opened doors.

Supporting the babe in both of his arms, the young rider watched as violet eyes blinked tiredly up at him. "Don't worry, Prince Duo," he said softly. "I promise that no harm will come to you so long as I am alive."
