Past, Present and Future

"I... I can't believe that you cut it," Heero stammered as he stepped into his Preventer partner's apartment. When Duo had told him that he had a surprise for him when he got to his place, this was the absolute last thing that he had expected.

Grinning widely, the no-longer-braided agent ran a hand through his locks that fell just above his shoulders in a shaggy cut. "Do you like it?" he asked.

Still reeling over seeing his lover without his infamous long hair, the ex-Wing pilot stammered before admitting, "I'm just getting over the shock." Of course Duo was no less gorgeous without his hair than he was with it. In fact, the shorter look framed his heart-shaped face beautifully.

Chuckling, his partner took one of Heero's hands and moved its fingers through it with an urged, "It's actually healthier and silkier this way."

Inwardly groaning, Yuy could only nod. There was always something about touching the American's hair that got his pulse racing.

Finally coming out of his surprised state, the once known 'Perfect Soldier' shook his head, "But... that hair meant everything to you. That was your memories of your past. Solo. Sister Helen. Father Maxwell..."

His smile only growing, Duo shrugged, "Well, I woke up this morning with a realization." Intrigued as to where this was going, Heero nodded for him to continue. "See, I'll always have my memories of my past and the people I loved. I don't need my hair to remind me of them. Up until a couple of weeks ago when we um..." He cleared his throat and blushed.

Now Agent Wing grinned at his partner's loss of words and slight discomfort. "Became intimate," he provided quietly.

Quickly nodding, Maxwell went on, "Yea. Up until then, that hair was like a security blanket for me. It protected a part of me that I was afraid I may lose when I finally realized that I was being silly for thinking that way. I have something in my life that I want to focus on instead of the past. So, I was willing to let it go."

Blinking his widened cobalt eyes, Heero breathed, "You... you did this for me?"

Duo's smile returned as he wrapped his arms around his lover's waist. "It's time that I let go of my past. What better way of taking that step than shedding it? We'll make happier memories together." Shrugging, he said, "And I would rather focus everything on that."

Moved by that sentiment, that gesture, the Japanese teenager swooped in for a searing kiss through which he poured every bit of emotion that he could. "I love you," he whispered breathlessly when they broke away to pant for air.

He felt something silky slip into his hand. Looking down, he found the rope of a braid that had once been attached to his partner.

"It's yours," Duo explained when Heero looked up in question. "So you hold my past, present and future." He grinned as he leaned in to kiss his stunned love's lips. "Happy One Month Anniversary, 'Ro."

Gripping the braid tightly, the ex-Wing pilot smirked, "You're certainly setting a pretty high bar for how I am going to top this gift for our first year anniversary."

As Agent Night laughed, he was pulled in for another heated kiss.

Whatever it took, Heero was going to make sure that Duo only had happiness to look forward to for the rest of their days. And while they never forgot their pasts, they never looked back.
