The Meaning of Life Prologue

"Great work on that Santino case back there, Duo," Cecelia smiled warmly as she and her partner stepped out of the courtroom with their briefcases in hand. Both sharply dressed in their business suits, they headed down the hallway together. "Your research into the family's background really helped us in getting the judge to approve their citizenship here.

Grinning widely, the braided teenager replied, "Glad I could be of help." His chest swelling in pride at recalling the looks of relief and joy in his defendants' faces, he commented, "It's great to be interning in the field I plan on joining when I get my masters degree in a few years.

The brunette woman chuckled quietly, "At this rate, you won't even need to worry about obtaining your masters. It's been some time since I have seen a student as promising as you."

In reaching the end of the hallway, Cecelia pressed the elevator button and turned to face the young student. Tilting her head, she smirked, "This job needs someone like you, Maxwell. Considering your own experiences, no one can understand our clients' experiences better than someone in your position."

Quietly purring at that, Duo's tail swayed behind him as his ears perked up. It meant the world to him to be able to use his own unique qualities to help those who needed to find their own place in the world. To know that he was well on his way to doing just that was the greatest honor he could ever receive.

When the elevator doors opened, the lawyer and intern stepped inside and headed down to the lobby. Keeping up their conversation during the ride to the ground level and on the way through the main entrance, they stopped just outside of the courthouse's main glass doors.

Outside, the early summer afternoon was a brilliant and warm one. All around the streets were busy with people moving about on foot, by bike and in their cars.

Cecelia grinned warmly and extended her free hand while offering a kind, "Well, enjoy your summer break. You've earned those three months off. Our firm will be most happy to have you back when you return."

"Thanks, Cecelia. I'm looking forward to working with all of you again," the neko smiled as they exchanged a firm shake just before his partner descended the stairs. Once he was alone at the courthouse doors, Duo fisted his hand to throw it in the air with a quiet, "Yes." Lightly bouncing on the balls of his feet, his violet eyes spotted a familiar red car making its way through the mill of traffic.

All but running down the stairs when the vehicle parked in one of the facility's few open spaces, he quickly opened the passenger door and slid inside. "Heero!" he cheered, throwing his arms around his lover's neck and kissing him soundly. Pulling back, he panted, "Hi!"

Chuckling warmly, the art student smirked, "I take it that the case went well?"

Duo nodded excitedly, "Better than well! The judge personally credited me with the Santino family being granted citizenship here on Earth for my research! Cecelia and her associates are signing me onto another internship with their firm right away for next semester!"

Taken aback for only a moment, Heero's cobalt eyes widened as he laughed, "That's great, Duo!" Leaning in, he kissed his lover's lips gently. "I'm proud of you," the Japanese youth said sincerely. His tail swishing excitedly, the neko just grinned and lowered his briefcase onto the floor to close the passenger door behind him.

"We should celebrate tonight," the artist suggested while pulling the car back out into traffic. "Our semester is officially over and it's our last night at our apartment before we head home for the summer."

Raising his eyebrows, the studying lawyer smirked with a deep purr, "What did you have in mind?"

Lightly shrugging, Heero peered out of the corner of his eye to his partner. "Dinner, maybe a movie back at our place with a bottle wine that I was given in thanks from a client of mine for a mural I finished up for her along with a very nice paycheck."

At that, Duo's smile only grew. Nodding his braided bead, he replied, "Sounds great to me." Quietly, his lover chuckled as he reached over to clasp their hands together for the remainder of the drive back to their apartment.

Following so many obstacles that they had endured over the years, everything was finally falling into place for them.

Life was good.
