Elements of Great Design Thanksgiving Sidefic
Of Blank Pages and Missing Pieces
Another Thanksgiving, another day at the office. They were both the same to Wufei Chang.
Peering through the glass windows of his office, the Preventer sighed at the first signs of snow drifting from the dense clouds blanketing the sky. Something about dreary heavens always struck an odd chord with Agent Wolf. Why that was had been a mystery... but when it snowed on an already dampened mood, it put him in an even worse state.
Damn the weatherman for getting it right on today of all days.
From his position on the facility's sixtieth floor, the Gundam pilot could see how the flakes were quickly gathering on the tops of the other buildings spread around the city. Instead of taking in the wonder of it, all he could think about was the hassle that it would make for the commute to Winner's closest estate.
Luckily for Wufei, headquarters was all but emptied out thanks to the holiday. Those, like Trowa and Quatre, who were perfectly thrilled in solid relationships could enjoy the romantic feel of the day away from him. Having to see those lovers' smiles and joy hard enough to bear without the seasons that reminded them that they had such blessings to be grateful for...
...while Chang would continue to work in a half-empty office and return to an even more vacant home at the end of the days that he would stretch out as much as he could to avoid it.
Ever since the Mariemaia incident, he had spiraled deep into the abyss of struggling to find himself. And it was not a very fulfilling journey. Were it not for the missions and reports required of him through the Preventers, Wufei wondered what he would have ever done with himself.
Nothing seemed to make him truly happy. Whether that was all out of regret for his actions in what would have been Operation Meteor or simply trying to figure his place in a world without a real war... or both he did not know.
The only way that Chang could reason to himself was that he felt like a blank page... a broken piece of a large puzzle that he had no idea how to bring it together. He was just incomplete and barren. Trying to explain it to anyone else was impossible, but that was how he came to understand where he was in life.
But there was a profound effect on the people around him even if he was cold to the somber condition that resided in him.
Sally had requested a transfer in partners months after Chang's enlistment when there was little getting through to him despite her best efforts. In that situation, there was little doubt of her true intentions and the Gundam pilot was not willing or ready to have their relationship grow beyond a friendship outside of work and professional inside.
Finally, Po gracefully bowed out and found the connection she longed for in a silver-haired agent by the name of Firion who had signed on at the time of her shift. To this day, the three were comfortable acquaintances in business and casual get-togethers.
A consistent worrier, Quatre was no surprise checking in on Wufei any and every opportunity he had. Trowa did his best to keep his lover from becoming a nuisance but his own concerns were pretty clear, leaving him to allow Winner a few extra peek-ins to see how their raven-haired 'brother' was fairing.
They did their best... God knows they tried to get him out and socialize for something other than seeing the same walls between his workspace and home from time to time.
Other than their invitations to holiday events that they threw, the Chinese agent turned down every offer. At least he was understanding enough to partake in some festivities... and only when the celebrations had been ongoing for several hours by the time he closed up shop for the night. It limited the time of sad glimpses passing his way when the onlooker did not think that he was looking.
And if there was one thing that Wufei Chang despised more than romantic atmospheres and reminders of how little he had it was to be pitied. But that was not about to change so long as he reported in for Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas parties alone.
Then, just to put the icing on the perpetual cake of seclusion, even Duo had long given up on trying to brighten the former ShenLong pilot's seemingly constant brooding. There was enough on the braided agent's mind as it was, what with his missing a certain Perfect Solider over the last year-and-a-half.
Really, the last thing Maxwell needed was anyone to bring him any more down than what he was already covering up with that smile and pranks on the new recruits whenever they were brought into the fold.
In speaking of new recruits...
His fingers stilling above his keyboard to end their hammering that had begun at a low rattle to grow into a loud clamor, Wufei eyed the desk on the other side of the room.
Bare and darkened every bit as his soul, that half of the work area was awaiting the arrival of his new partner. No details were given regarding this brave person who dared to come in and attempt to keep up with a retired Gundam pilot. Several had taken the shot since Sally's transfer. All had failed. What was another in a long line of disappointments?
Really considering his depressing thoughts at that moment, Chang sighed and wondered when he had become such a recluse in his own thoughts. And just when he began to make the effort to try and turn his feelings around for at least that holiday, the music that was lightly playing over the speakers in the ceiling shifted over to Christmas tunes that would run for the remainder of the year.
A frustrated groan erupting from him, the Preventer fell back in his chair and closed his eyes. "Great," he muttered in a low growl. "Nothing like hearing the same damn songs a hundred thousand times over the next few weeks."
Before he could continue wallowing in his misery, the buzz of an incoming call rang from his phone. Straightening himself, he flipped the speaker option and greeted flatly, "Yes?"
"Agent Wolf," Carol from the front desk responded in that kind tone of hers, "Your new partner came in to get a head start on moving into your shared office before the rush of everyone coming back to work next week. Lady Une gave them clearance since she knew you were going to be in."
Onyx eyes blinking in surprise, Wufei peered back to the spare desk. On Thanksgiving the recruit wanted to move their things in? Another lonely soul. That could be the only explanation to why they would bother doing such a thing on Thanksgiving.
Peering back at his screen, Chang shrugged to himself. It was not like the analysis was in any rush of being completed. Besides, if nothing else, he could go for a bit of amusement at sizing up his fellow agent and silently betting how long he was going to last.
As he pushed his chair away from his desk, he announced, "I'll be right down." Cutting the connection, he got to his feet and stepped out into the hallway.
Once he was inside the elevator, the agent folded his arms across hiss chest. Leaning back against the furthest wall from the doors, he sighed and closed his eyes. Aside from the serene quiet, it was also nice to not have a wait for the lift on a holiday. He was going to miss those things come Monday when life returned to normal.
Preparing himself to make a real attempt at being respectful to the poor bastard about to walk into his world, Wufei opened his eyes when the elevator came to a stop and its doors opened. With a deep breath, he made his way out to the lobby where a slender figure was standing with their back to him.
Thick curls of vibrant red fell to the lower back of a young woman in a Preventer's skirt and simple black pumps as Carol spoke and laughed with her. Frowning deeply, Chang paused at the unexpected sight. Surely his new partner was not a woman? Not since Sally had another female shared his office and his missions.
But sure enough... there were two brown boxes filled with belongings sitting at her feet.
Clearing his throat as he neared, the former pilot introduced, "Pardon me. I'm Agent Wolf, or Wufei if you wish... and you are...?" He froze as soon as the other agent turned to meet his gaze with hauntingly familiar blue eyes that sparked with a flame as vivacious as her hair.
Instantly, every last broken piece in Wufei fell into place with its missing part. The blank page that he had been was filled with words and explanations that had been hidden before.
Past experiences came rushing back to cover centuries upon centuries of lost images and memories both dark and dear closed the gap on his present existence so quickly and hard in impact that the air rushed out off his lungs and past his gaping mouth.
A knowing smirk curling her lip, that dangerous mischief played in the new Preventer's irises as she replied, "Agent Firefly. But you can call me Anna." She winked and reached out a hand to keep up the act that this was their first meeting... when in all reality no being knew Chang better than she did.
Swallowing roughly, the raven-haired Element forced his wide eyes to relax as he reached out wrap his fingers around her palm. The moment their skin touched for that first time in this existence, he thought that he would have burned from the sensation that overwhelmed him. Every bit of his essence ached to hold her closer, to kiss her and to reunite the way he never knew he could desire anything before he set eyes on her.
"Nice to meet you," Wufei managed in a breath. Shaking his head when he noted Carol prop her heart-shaped face on her hands as she grinned in keen interest. No doubt the young blonde would be unable to help her gossiping ways and have word passed throughout headquarters how the cold Agent Wolf had been so clearly smitten with the newest recruit.
And for once in this life, Chang could not have given a damn about any of that.
Gesturing to the boxes at his soul mate's feet, he grinned sheepishly, "Ah... let me give you a hand with those." Fire smiled and gave an appreciative nod. Bending along with him so that they each took up a case, she followed him back to the elevator.
Heart hammering in his chest when the doors slid closed and the lift began its climb up, Wufei was practically vibrating with the need to be alone with his lover.. but that damned red light on the surveillance camera aimed down at them reminded him to be careful.
Suddenly and without warning, Anna lowered the box in her arms and moved to the elevator control panel just beyond the span of what the video could catch. Pressing a hand against the cool metal there when they were between the fortieth and forty-first floors, the touch caused a series of sparks beneath the box that brought the lift to a screeching halt at the same time that the red eye of the camera died out.
All but tossing the box he was carrying aside, Wufei closed in on her when she began to turn back his way in the next blink of an eye and locked their lips together in a desperate kiss. Tongues sparring, the Elements panted heavily as their bodies ground together in their need to be as close as possible.
Nimble fingers worked away their ties, blouses, skirt, pants, shoes and undergarments with ease and incredible speed that made it seem as though all of those articles melted away.
Picked up and her back pressed up against the wall behind her, Anna cried out in rapture when her partner in every sense of the word buried himself into her. Nails digging into his sides, she fell into an effortless rhythm with him to rise and fall in tune along with their kissing everything that their lips could reach. S
Twisting, licking and biting her breast in the familiar knowledge of what they both enjoyed in their passionate love making, Chang grunted with the pleasure that filled him over the delicious sounds from whimpers to moans that he caused. Flesh dampening with sweat, not a single movement was wasted and nothing, right down to the taste of each other, was taken for granted as their souls healed following their long separation.
And when they climaxed together, crying each other's names with tears in their eyes, Earth and Fire remained linked together as they remained on their feet but sagging heavily against one another as they recovered.
Tightening his arms around the redhead when he finally regained his senses, Wufei closed his eyes and buried his head in the nook of her shoulder as the last of the walls around his heat came down... and he sobbed quietly against her.
In the understanding that only she had for her soul mate, Anna bit her lip and closed her eyes as well while tightening her own hold on him. Feeling his pain and the loss that had wracked him up to their rejoining, she simply ran a hand through his loose, dark hair and allowed him to release all that had bound him. "Let it out, Earth," she whispered, "I'm not going anywhere."
Where she had been for so long... what she had been up to and so many other questions that Wufei had up to then were completely forgotten. All that mattered was that they were together as they should be... and as she promised, she was not going away ever again in this existence.
At long last, the burden of his loneliness and the dark shroud around him lifting, it was as if every last hole in him had been patched up. He was complete again... something that he had yet to have felt up to then.
Slowly, their whole persons trembling, the lovers reluctantly pulled apart as Chang lowered his partner to her feet.
Their arms still draped around each other, they engaged in a few open mouth kisses and pecks of a sweeter and even more profoundly emotional nature. "Love you.... so damned much," the former Monk breathed against the past thief's lips.
"I adore you," Anna replied in kind, a smile on her swollen mouth and a shimmer in her eyes. Sighing, she commented softly, "We have so much catching up to do."
Nodding, Earth smirked, "Death, Air and Water are going to be so thrilled to see you again. Now I finally know what they have been tying to hint to me all these months to spur my memories." To the unspoken question that flashed in Fire's eyes, he frowned, "Life has not come around yet. He has been missing for some time."
Without a hint of doubt, Fire declared, "He'll be back. Nothing will be able to keep him away from Death forever." Giggling, she rested their foreheads together and reached up to gently brush away the tears from her lover's face as she shrugged, "Just as nothing in this world was going to keep me from you any longer."
Chuckling, Wufei responded, "I definitely could not ask for anything to be more thankful for today. This will easily go down as the best Thanksgiving I could have asked for."
"Ah, yea... about that," Anna snickered wickedly, "there was a reason why I picked today to see you again."
Tilting his head, Chang snorted, "Oh? And what reason is that-"
He was interrupted when a crackle came over the com before Carol's voice called, "Hello, Elevator B? Agent Wolf? Agent Firefly? Are you in there?"
A quick glimpse up to the camera confirmed that it was still out. Pressing the button on the com, Wufei answered, "Yea, we're here." Playing naive, he inquired, "What happened?"
"We're not exactly sure down here," the receptionist came back, "It looks like an electrical fire that even knocked out the alarm system. We can't see in there and are working to find where you're stuck..."
There was a moment's hesitation before she added, "But there is a bit of a problem there with this being a holiday... Mike in facilities said it will probably be hours before we can get the team we need in here to get you out of there."
Biting her lip, Anna's whole naked body shook with the laughter she struggled to contain. A knowing grin spreading across his lips, Chang hit the com again to reassure, "Tell everyone no rush. It's not like either of us in here are missing anything right now. We can wait."
Nor would they be missing anything ever again.
"O-oh, okay," the girl stammered, the disbelief dripping from her voice over how she had not been chewed out. "I suppose that I won't call off my family's visit with dinner for the crew while I try to get through to someone who can help."
Wufei smiled, "You enjoy. Thanks, Carol. Happy Thanksgiving."
"Happy Thanksgiving," came the chipper response before the com fell silent once more.
Turning to meet his lover's devilish glimmer in her eyes, Chang refrained from the low growl as he eyed her pristine body from head-to-toe.
"Well damn," Anna sighed in feigned disappointment as she twirled a few curls long her fingers, "what *are* we going to do with all of that time?" An eyebrow raising, she gave a playful, lopsided smirk.
The expression was returned in kind before Earth swooped in to be permanently scorched by Fire once more.
