Elements of Great Design Prologue

"The time has come, child."

"Yes, Uncle. The army is on the move into Coneria as we speak. I have given the orders that none are to be spared so that the people there will be made as an example to the surrounding lands."

"Wonderful, my dear."

In the world of Gaia- where great cities are separated by miles of hills, forest, mountains and rivers- life is a peaceful thing. Age matters little as the people and creatures residing there physically age slower than any other beings in other universes. Every city is ruled by a Sovereign; by that a King and or Queen. Few travel beyond their own borders, unless they are individuals of trade or soldiers.

Familiarity is the comfort of the men, women and children of this breathtakingly beautiful world. While there is a sincere love for one's homeland, there is also the fear of the unknown that keeps them where they were born and raised. Classes are determined amongst the people based on the roles that they perform, something which is no different from town-to-town. Everyone serves some kind of purpose for the better of their city. There is a level of pride with every such role. There were few more proud than the Fighters.

And in the city of Peacemillion at the heart of Gaia, few Fighters were more proud than Heero Yuy.

Deemed to be at the top of the newest prospects to defend his homeland, the handsome young man was plucked out of training at the young physical age of sixteen. Such a thing was unheard of, but the lad was both a quick study and eager to do whatever was asked of him in his tasks. He became very apt in handling the long sword that had been a gift from his father, Odin. Maneuvering in the thick, red-and-gold armor that reflected Peacemillion's colors was no challenge for him.

It was because of that physical and mental strength that Heero had Queen Relena's sword tip pressed against either of his shoulders in his official naming as a fully-fledged Fighter. Of course, he also would have been a fool to not see that the young ruler had an eye for him. Peacecraft made no attempt to hide her unrequited infatuation. But his honor was only earned through the soldier's efforts, tried and true with the blessing of his outranking officers.

On a particularly warm afternoon, Yuy stood guard atop the stone walls that wrapped around Romefeller. Staring to the north, a small smile tugged his lips on this being the end of his first whole week in his new role.

Life was good... actually it could not get any better than it was at that moment. Everything was as I should be.

Unbeknownst to Heero, or anyone in Peacemillion, the threat to life as they knew it was in grave danger. Only the start of the storm was not blowing in from some distant land...

...it was brewing within the safety of the kingdom walls.

"You have sentenced us to death."

Queen Relena Peacecraft's eyes grew as she spun to face her Oracle.

"There must be a mistake," she breathed, still reeling over her most trusted of advisers and dear friend. Such a comment would never have been made of Dorothy Catalonia did not believe it. She never would have stirred the chill and panic that came over the new queen of only one month if there was not reason... but the deed was done.

Whether or not the talented fortune teller was right, the deed was done. There was simply no going back now. Her response to the pact was not only sealed but on its way to its originator. Where the line had been drawn for her signature to be written, the Queen had instead left droplets of her spit.

Her skin paling at the icy chill that ran down her back at those words, Peacecraft frowned deeply, "Mariemaia is a child." A hand raising to point at the opened scroll of paper that was her copy of the pact on the tall table beside her throne, she laughed, "She cannot possibly be gifted in her sorcery enough to carry out the threat of leveling a city of this magnitude! Paramecia was one thing, but she believes to extend the borders of her control! I should not have shown that little girl the dignity of any sort of response!"

Dorothy's form-fitting silk shimmered and floated on the air as she closed the distance between them. Resting her hands on her friend's shoulders, she said quietly, "I did not mean to upset you, or have you think that your actions have brought on the fate that I now see clearly. No matter what choice you made, be it siding with the child or tearing her treaty to shreds, this city and everyone in it will fall at the hands of Mariemaia and the darkness that she is bringing into this world."

Gasping sharply, Relena's legs threatened to give out but her Oracle helped keep her upright. Unconsciously reaching up to run her fingers along the gold crown against her head and the large diamond that dipped down in the middle of her forehead, she silently wished that her parents were still living. After their untimely death in a shipwreck less than a year ago, so much had fallen on her shoulders that were still too small to bear the load of ruling over an entire land.

Now she was forced to deal with this... standing on the edge of a deep abyss of chaos and devastation brought on by a little girl with not only the ambition, but obviously, the power to ruin all in her path.

Mariemaia's take over of the Paramecia Empire had been thought by all of the other realms as a fluke... just the right amount of circumstances leading to the fall of King Treize and Lady Une. However, as more and more time passed and failed attempt after failed attempt had been made to liberate the city, word of the terrors that she was unleashing were reaching to the furthest reaches of Gaia.

"W-what are we to do?" the Queen almost wailed, pleading to her trusted aid for guidance. "There simply must be a way that we can stand against her."

Taking a deep breath, Dorothy lowered her hands from her friend and answered, "We must run. Everyone in Peacemillion must be alerted immediately to pack what they can so that we can move as far east as possible. We need to save every second if we are to have any chance of surviving. If possible, we need to be on the move in no longer than two days time."

Dumbfounded by that, Relena's jaw fell. "Paramecia is nearly a month's journey away from us. Surely we have more time than that to leave-" She stopped herself at the grim expression that settled on her friend's face. "We do not have that long," she breathed, the panic dripping in her voice at her realization. "Her army is already coming for us."

With a shimmer in her clear blue eyes, the Oracle nodded firmly, "Yes, my Queen."

Hidden deep in their safe havens at the four corners of Gaia, four gems glowed brilliantly even in the absence of light as they had for thousands upon thousands of years.

On that day, their light completely dimmed away.

From his perch high above Peacemillion, Heero frowned at the sudden appearance of a thick darkness that covered the sky in the far off northwest. Shielding his eyes from the sun that hung high and brilliantly over his end of the world, he narrowed his cobalt eyes to try and get a better look at the strange sight.

"Those clouds moved in awful fast," the fighter muttered to himself. Unnatural as that was, it was just how black the coverage was... literally making whatever was beneath its shroud fall into night in the middle of the day.

Yuy felt the hairs on his arms stand up at the unsettled feeling that came over him...

...Based on the location and the distance of those clouds, they were hanging over the Paramecia Empire.

From that moment on, nothing of the world or life that anyone in Gaia knew it to be would ever be the same.
