Crimson Bonds Prologue

Septum Millers was nothing if not persistent.

Others considered him obsessed.

Whatever the level of his fascination with Vampires may have actually been, he was not about to be deterred in his hunt...

...not when he felt that he was closing in on his prime target. And most certainly not when he knew of the Antarctic base that had been destroyed by one of the only two recorded hybrids to exist in the world.

Besides, if he were truly insane, he would never have convinced so many others working along with him to resume the research that his Uncle, formerly known by Instructor H, of seven generations passed had died gathering. Little did anyone know of the backup data stored in a secured location off-base that only recently came to light when Septum inherited the lockbox that none in his family before him had bothered to open.

Like so many, everyone in his line of lineage until the up and coming scientist thought that H was crazy. A blight on the family. It was a miracle that whatever remained of the old man had not been destroyed out of spite.

Instead, the information was safe and handed over to the one person who not only cared, but could decipher the coded data in order to bring the wealth of knowledge within to light after centuries of being buried.

Sealed away in his main office, the dark-haired man sat back in his leather chair as he brought the mouse to drag the arrow on his screen over the 'Play' option displayed to him. Closing his eyes when he clicked the recording to life, he heard the same message that had given him a new purpose in life...

The weary voice of his long-passed Uncle dictated, "We thought that we could make a weapon... the ultimate weapon that could stand up to Vampires and livings alike should there ever be a need. But… I think we have gone too far. Solo is incredible. A masterpiece, but he is too strong now. And it's become clear that he can manipulate some humans, turn them."

Another sigh followed by stillness resonated before H all but whispered, "Sometimes, I think I'm the only one who sees the threatening darkness that had been born out of our own devices."

There was another long pause before H all but whispered, "If Solo is capable of turning, I have little doubt that his brother can do the same do the same to Vampires." With a tremble in his timbre, he said, "I fear for both of our kinds if they were to ever reunite if they ever knew their true potential. God help all of His creations if that day were to ever come."

Sharing concerned, shaken expressions, the pair shot up in their seats at the sound of an explosion over the speakers. "Oh dear God! NO!" the Instructor shrieked so loudly that his voice shrilled. "NOOO!"

His cries were silenced, completely covered over by an animalistic series of snarls and howls that was joined by the thick snaps of bone snapping, metal grinding and glass breaking.

And all that remained for the rest of the recording was the white noise of static.

Opening his eyes at the sound of the static that filled his room, Septum closed the displayed player on his screen. Two hybrids... born of Vampire and human. The fate of the one known as Solo was a mystery after he destroyed the fortress of a lab that had studied him... but then a strange series of events led to the belief that he was long gone now.

Following the sudden stop of a series of world-wide human disappearances where most had suddenly resurfaced as Companions to Vampires, the link took a resolute mind to connect. A mind like Miller's. He pieced together the missing pieces and came to the conclusion that Solo was behind the gathering of those individuals. And when he was killed, they were rescued by their bonded Infected.

But that still left the one that got away. The Hybrid that did not share his brother's fate in being left to the studies and tests. The one who was still likely walking the earth.

Answers might not come easily, but there was always a way to find them. There was always a loose tie connecting the gaps. It only took determination to bring them together.

It was the Vampire registry that brought it all to light. Everything that Septum needed was right there in the public records at his disposal whenever he wanted it all along. It was by a stroke of luck that he had thought to check those reports and came across the key that he needed to prove his sanity to himself...

Around the same time that the strange cases of missing persons had been closed, a whole clan of Infected was no longer registered. Of course no humans would ever have thought twice if the number of Vampires suddenly dropped. The point of the registry was to determine that there were no new cases of turnings that would have served as a breach of the pact between the living and the immortals.

Between hunters and other hateful mortals there were any number of ways that the Infected could be killed. However, there was only one explanation for a growth in their population and that was to spread their disease into a human. True to their agreement, there was never a single soul added to the count and so those who concerned themselves with the information looked the other way.

Septum, was even more invested than those politicians since his reasons were personal. If he could be the one to bring to light that there was in fact a child born of a Vampire he would be a modern hero in the worlds of medicine and science. He only needed to continue where his great, great, great, great, great Uncle had left off and press on with those studies.

Which brought him back to that missing clan. Unfortunate enough for any one so-called 'family' of Infected to lose one or two of their own, but a whole establishment of them to be wiped away was especially tragic...

...if it so happened to be true. Millers did not believe it to be so.

Pulling out the newspaper article sealed away in preserving plastic that had kept it in pristine condition, Septum smirked to himself. This story had captured the formerly known Instructor H's imagination and fascination with the immortals... enough so that he had preserved it and locked it away in the box of his most prized possessions.

It was the tale of the last turned Vampire to be accepted into their fold.

Wufei Chang.

The image on the front of the back-and-white page revealed a creature draped in a hooded cloak with his hands shoved in its pockets as he walked with his concealed face lowered amidst the crowds gathered around the Supreme Court. Descending the steps of the facility, he paid no mind to the people flanking him with such a desire to leave them behind that any onlooker of the image could swear that he was still moving within the page.

What little of the apparent being was revealed came from the chin protruding beyond the cover of the shroud to reveal the marbled skin that had been transformed into scales when his soul mate had turned him to preserve the life within him that he had attempted to snuff out. It was that physical change that had left no doubt to her transgression since she was not an Original... the only of her kind that could infect a mortal without bringing on a mutation in them.

A remarkable case, this one. In the end, love and the profound bond between a Vampire and their Chosen won out.

Instead of going forth with the charges against his mate, Wufei had beseeched the jury to show mercy on his maker. The plea had spared her existence, one that had been doomed up until that moment of judgment. Rather than be executed, she was sentenced to a prison term to appease the humans demanding some sort of reprimand.

Coming out of the court house at the end of the trial, this image of Chang had been snapped and immortalized on the front page of the worldwide news.

But oh how fleeting were the interests of the living. It was a sweet story, proof of how Infected were beings capable of emotions every bit as much as humans. And it was nothing more when time rolled on enough to make it fade from the memory of the public at large.

Had those people known that this Wufei Chang and his maker, Anna, were included in the clan that had disappeared... now that would have been something to them. But it also would interfere with Septum's work so he was not about to let that little bit of information leak out.

The ones he needed on his side were the only ones who would share the secret.

No clan with two of the more noteworthy immortals would vanish and remain so without a very good reason. They were protecting someone. And Millers was convinced that someone may have very well been the one creature that he was searching for.

So, it was the Barton-Yuy-Chang clan that had become the primary target. And it was the stubborn scientist who would snuff them out if it was the last thing he did.

His mouth curling up in a dark smirk, Septum snorted to himself, "I never settle for getting anything less than what I want. If that makes me insane, so be it."

"Nowhere for you to run now," came the unnaturally deep voice.

Growling lowly, the tallest of the cornered trio of Vampires turned to face the five of their own kind who had chased them down. Of the eyes boring down on them from the entrance of the alleyway that they had come to find led to a dead end, four pairs of irises bore the usual outer rings of gold.

The forth, belonging to the one who had spoken, were a piercing violet surrounded by silver.

At the far right of the pack, the Infected with long curls of a fiery red spoke in an Irish accent, "Gotta hand it to 'ye. Fer Rogues, we 'ad a time findin' 'ya." Her blue-and-gold eyes narrowing, she hissed, "Would'a been nice if 'ye hadn't killed those humans first."

Snorting, the tallest of the fallen immortals retorted, "Street walkers and bums are hardly going to be missed from society." His large hands balling into fists, he called forth overlapping spikes as strong as metal to cover his body as he smirked, "As for your little Preventers' mission of killing us, you will have an even more difficult time at that than what you faced in tracking us."

It was the scaly one between the braided Companion and the redhead that chuckled deeply, "Challenge accepted."

Shooting forth in a blur of himself, the Chinese Vampire reappeared at the same time that the violent uppercut he delivered sliced through the strong quills without a single cut into his unique flesh, the punch landing square into the Rogue's lower jaw and sending him flying back into the brick wall behind him.

The rebels flanking their 'brother' darted off to scale the tall barriers blocking them in.

Of the two Originals of the Preventers, the one with the unruly short hair bit out in a command, "Anna."

"'m already on it, brother," the Irish Infected responded before bolting off after the female of the smaller pack. Covering the distance between her and the blonde in incredible speed, she grabbed the other Vampire by the hair and hurled her to the ground before the wall could be scaled.

For the other male rogue, it was the second Original with a long bang covering his right emerald-and-gold eye that had set after him. Though he was not as fast as the redhead, he was able to clip his target by firing off a blade that sliced into the Rogue's spine that caused him to spiral to the ground.

With the three murderous immortals engaged in brutal hand-to-hand duels with their challengers, the silver-eyed Companion and his Chosen stepped forward. Turning to his lover, the Japanese Vampire said quietly, "Make it quick. We can't draw any more attention here than we already have."

Violet irises glowing, the braided creature stepped forward as his fangs grew in.

The fight was fast indeed after that.

Duo rubbed the back of his neck when he put Shinigami to rest until he was needed again. With a small whistle through his teeth when he appraised the large bonfire that sparked violet and red at times with smoke of the same hues, he only then recognized the back woods far from the cluster of homes that they owned in the mountain ranges.

Quickly making note of everyone in his clan that had set after the Rogues that were now smoldering, he muttered, "Way to keep our family safe, buddy."

Deep within him, he could hear the contented purr of his alter ego.

A pair of strong arms looped around the Hybrid's waist to pull him back against a firm chest. Planting a kiss in the nape of his husband's neck, Heero smiled lovingly as he whispered by his ear, "Both of you were great tonight." Maxwell craned his head around to return the grin and leaned in for a much more satisfying kiss.

"Killing these bastards is a hell of a lot easier with no one aware that we exist on paper," Trowa smirked as he threw the last large piece of wood onto the burning remains. As he walked around to his cousins, he shrugged, "Things could have gone a lot worse considering how little we had to go on with this bunch."

His scaly skin shimmering in the glow of the flames, Wufei made his way to his wife as she removed the long-sleeved wrap over her purple tank top to reveal the long and deep injuries in her exposed arms that she took on during the fight. "Here," he urged gently as he sat behind her on the large rock that she was perched on.

A marbled arm fell over her shoulder to stop by her mouth. Sighing, Anna breathed, "Thank you, love." Fangs growing in, she pierced through the skin of his wrists and drank as her wounds closed with every gulp. Resting his forehead on the back of her neck, Chang shuddered in pleasure from her taking in his essence.

Once she was fully healed, the redhead pulled away only to groan with another kind of rapture when her husband rubbed her shoulders to ease the tension that had set in them. Chuckling deeply as she leaned heavily into his touch, Wufei rained soft kisses from the nape of her neck to her the middle gap between her shoulder blades while he continued to massage her aches away.

"Love you," he murmured reverently as his soul mate turned to curl up tight against him. Their heads leaning so that their lips could meet, they took solace in their closeness and the reassurance of their well-being that came with it.

Burying the side of her face against her Other's arm, Anna whispered in kind, "I love you too, Wufei." Slowly turning her gaze to the fire that was quickly dying out, she announced quietly, "I need to see our kids. They'll probably be worried about us since we have been out hunting longer than expected."

The mere mention of their younglings brought another grin to the scaly Infected's face. "Yea. I have missed them something fierce, myself." Climbing to his feet, he offered a scaly hand and lightly pulled his bride up as he said, "We're finished here so let's get back home, Celtic Rose."

Peering back at the rest of their family, they waited for the grins and firm nods that they were every bit as ready to leave. And together, they faded into the thick folds of the forest beyond the clearing in blurs of themselves.
