Beyond This Life
They say when you die there is a peace that comes over you in your last moments.
For Heero Yuy, who had been slowly and painfully dying of cancer from the time he turned twelve, he was at peace from the moment of his diagnosis. While all of his friends and family around were grieving over what was to come of his grave situation, he was happy... because he realized then that he was not alone.
Over the course of his challenging chemotherapy that only gave him a handful of years, Heero came to know Duo- his guardian angel into death. Never able to really see his best friend, the boy could feel him... even spoke with him late at night when no one else was awake or around to hear him. At the lowest points of his treatment, he was always able to blame it on hallucinations to his worried loved ones.
Duo never left his side, always offering comforting words and promises of a better existence in 'the great beyond' as he called it. When Heero lost all of his hair, his guardian told him how beautiful he was. When the pain was at its worst, there were muttered reassurances through it. If ever he felt lost, there was always that beacon through the darkness.
As far as the dying young man was concerned, any life after would be wonderful if it meant that he would spend it with his angel of death.
"I know that we never met officially... but I love you, Heero. I have from the start. And I swear I'm not going to leave your side," the calming presence whispered to Yuy on the night he turned seventeen. Smiling, the frail young man faded into a contented sleep that had come as difficult to him leading up to that moment thanks to the pain that wracked his body.
Somehow, he had always known that Duo loved him. And even if they had not actually been able to touch... even if he couldn't see his angel, he knew that he loved him as well.
Drawing a deep breath, Yuy asked, "What is it like... beyond this life?"
His best friend's deep voice chuckled and his presence settled beside the boy before he answered, "Well, there's no pain or sadness. There are fields and other scenery that nothing in this world could compare to. And there's love... so much love that you won't ever be able to take it all in." There was a smirk in his words as he added, "Then, of course, I'll be there, too."
"Then I'll die happy," the boy declared quietly. He fell asleep that night swearing that he could feel a kiss press against his forehead.
Less than a month later, when he was too weak and too tired to go on, Heero decided to give up the fight. He had survived as long as he could for his parents, for his brother and sister, for his other relatives and friends. Now he was ready to leave the world as he knew it behind, unafraid of what was to come. Having had the opportunity to say his farewells to his nearest and dearest gathered in his hospital room, he let go.
When the cold set in and he felt himself slipping, the raised voices of the nurses around began to fade as he closed his eyes. His mother's hand that was gripping his own seemed far away. "I'm right here," that ever present voice whispered in his ear. "Everything is going to be alright, Heero."
Then... there was complete silence. There was no pain... no cold.
Blinking his eyes open, the teenage boy sat up and gazed around the beautiful meadow that he found himself in. A soft, warm breeze washed over him, playing with the unruly hair that had been gone for so long. His mouth falling open, he reached up to run his fingers through it. Laughing, he ignored the happy tears that were rolling down his face.
One-by-one, there were other presences stepping towards Heero. And he recognized them all... his grandparents, his uncles and aunts, cousins and friends that had passed before. There were more happy tears and laughter through the embraces and kisses. And then the small crowd parted to reveal the one being that he had never seen before...
...but he knew who the dark-winged angel was the moment he laid eyes on him.
"Duo," he breathed, wide-eyed with awe. As handsome as he had imagined his best friend to be, nothing gave his guardian the justice he deserved. A long rope of hair pulled back in a braid swung behind the other immortal teenager on the breeze and those large violet eyes were absolutely piercing when their shimmering gazes met.
Heaven was one thing with the surrounding of loved ones. However, now it actually felt like home.
A warm smile tugging his lips to spread across his heart-shaped face, Duo greeted, "Hello, Heero." Opening his arms to the white-winged angel that moved towards him, he pulled the charge that he had fallen in love with into a tight embrace. Clinging onto him just as fiercely, Yuy bit his lip and buried his head into his best friend's shoulder.
Softly, Heero managed the words that he wanted to be his first into this eternity. "I love you, Duo," he whispered to his soul mate. A soft whimper broke from the gorgeous creature in his arms. Pulling back, they craned their heads together for the deep kiss that they had both longed to share as the beginning of countless more.
Home. That really was the best way of describing the feeling.
It was just as he had been promised by his angel... everything was going to be alright in this world 'beyond life'.
...No. It was going to be wonderful.
