Author: Sami-pi
Rating: G?
Pairing: 2+1 (they're chibis... no 'x' haha!)
Warnings: Chibi, supernatural
Notes: I used a bit of LJ Smith's "Nightworld" series for vampire lore... where there are 'born' vampires and 'made' vampires. Born vampires can control how and when they age (but they can't go backwards, I think, like, they can't get younger, but they can stop, start, and slow down their own aging process). Made vampires are stuck at the age they were when they were changed.
Author's Note: Started many, MANY moons ago... and completed a couple moons ago... just never got around to posting until now. ^O^;;; but... it is kind of halloweeny?
Once upon a time, sunhawk16 wrote a ficcy thing named "Buried Treasures" which was just beyond all kinds of touching. Scrolling through the comments, I stumbled upon one by trixie_chick mentioning chibi vampires~ and... this is what I thought up. ^O^;;; then... and I just finished it... last month... because I'd forgotten about it and only just dug it back out again. ^O^;;;;;; (I'm an irresponsible ficcer)
Promises of Forever
"Duo," his mother said, gently hooking one finger behind his fangs and lifting him free of Heero. "If you keep breaking your toys right away, we're not going to bring you any new ones."
"But, Momma!" Duo protested. "He said I could!"
Little Heero, though in a bit of a daze, nodded cheerfully enough.
Duo pulled away from his mother and clutched Heero's body closer. "And I'm not breaking him. I'm gonna change him, an' then we can be friends forever."
Duo's mother got down on her knees so that she was eye level with her little son.
"Duo, you don't want to change Heero right now."
"I do!"
"No you don't. If you change Heero right now, he's going to be stuck in this body forever."
"I like this body." Duo was looking particularly obstinate and his mother sighed.
"I mean that Heero's going to look like a five year old for all eternity, Duo--"
"I know! I'm going to stay the same forever too! I promised. We're gonna play an' nap an' have snacks an' never ever have to worry about grown up stuffs."
"Honey, you can choose to age or not age at any time, but if you change Heero now, that's it, he'll be stuck." She reached out and patted Heero lightly on the head, much as one might pet a favoured puppy.
Duo clutched Heero tighter to him.
"Think about it this way, sweetie, Heero will never be tall enough to do any big boy stuff. He'll never be able to see over the counter, or reach the top shelf, or ride on the fun rides at the amusement park. Do you want to do that? If you get tired of this child's life, you can start your aging again, but have you really thought about Heero's feelings? Will he be happy like this in ten years? Twenty years? A thousand?"
Heero's eyes widened as his head began to clear and he realized that Duo and his mother were talking about him and his future.
"I will be happy if I am with Duo. Forever," Heero said, very firmly.
Duo's mom sighed again and withdrew a little, rocking back on her heels.
"Humans are so frivolous in their use of 'forever'."
Two chubby little faces peered up at her with confusion and concern. They clung to each other like they were going to be banished to separate ends of the universe. Duo's eyes were welling up with tears and Heero was trying to comfort Duo by offering him his wrist to gnaw on.
"Now, now," she pulled Heero's arm away from Duo's mouth. "We'll have none of that. Duo, you've already taken too much. Let him recover."
"Momma! I'm trying to drain him so I can change him!" Duo wailed.
Heero clung to Duo and patted him as comfortingly as he knew how.
"Duo, you're not being reasonable."
He sniffled and wrapped both arms tightly around Heero.
"Don't you want Heero to experience all the fun of growing up? Don't you want him to know how to ride a mountain bike? Or ski on the big boys' hill? Play real sports? Go to the movies by himself without needing an adult to accompany him? If Heero is trapped in this body, he'll never get to do any of that. And if you swear to stay with him, you won't either. The day may come when you two will start being angry at each other for forcing this eternity of childhood upon you both. You'll become tired of your limited lives. You don't want Heero to resent you, do you? I know you don't ever want to argue with your precious pet."
Duo reluctantly agreed to his mother's logic. He didn't want to hold Heero back. He wanted Heero to try everything, to know what it was like to play big boys' games and do big boy things like reaching the good snacks on the top shelf and all those types of grown up things. He just didn't want all the bad grown up stuff to happen. Humans were so very breakable.
"But what if something happens to Heero before he becomes a big boy? Or what if he decides he doesn't want to stay with me anymore?"
Heero pressed a chaste kiss against the side of Duo's head in reassurance.
"I'll stay with you always, Duo. I promised."
Duo's mother smiled a small bittersweet smile at the pair before her, making such vows so easily.
She reached for her son's little chin and brought him around to face her.
And looking deep into his eyes, she said, wholeheartedly: "You're just going to have to keep Heero safe and happy, Duo, so that when the time is right, he'll still want to be with you forever."
