Guess That's Being in Love

Duo Maxwell slipped into the empty office on silent feet. Like a ghost he wound his way past the filing cabinets and bookshelves. The breeze from his passage barely disturbed the loose papers. He did, however, pause to pick up a small, framed photograph from the immaculate desk. With gloved fingers he gently traced the captured faces, over dark brows, and down rounded cheeks. Smiling wistfully, he set the picture down again, casting a last, tender look before returning to the task at hand. He approached the office's wide, bay windows with caution. As quietly as possible, Duo opened the blinds. He blinked as his eyes adjusted to the bright, sun-soaked landscape before him. The braided man took a second to appreciate the new day before firmly turning to face 45 degrees northeast, squinting into the rising sun.

"Good morning, Heero," he whispered into the collar of his Preventer's jacket, one hand raised to press lightly on the glass.

"Maxwell! What on Earth are you doing in my office?" shouted Chang Wufei as he crawled out from under the desk, his own uniform severely rumpled.

Duo gave a startled 'meep' and backpedaled from the window, throwing his hands up in the air to show they were empty.

"Nothing!" he exclaimed, a bright, if inane, smile on his face.

Wufei glared at him.

Then Duo dropped his hands, cocked his head and peered closely at his old friend. "Oi, Wufei? What are you doing under your desk at five in the morning?"

Wufei scowled. "The stupid paperwork from that last case kept me here so late, it wasn't worth it to drive home! I just took a nap under my desk." He gestured to the bedding on the floor as if to prove himself.

Duo raised an eyebrow. "Whoa, man, if you work overtime often enough to warrant keeping a sleeping bag and pillow at the office, you need some time off! Just ask, man! I'm sure Une would grant it!"

Wufei shrugged his shoulders in a non-committal way.

Suddenly, he shook his head and glared at Duo. "Hey, you never answered my question! What are you doing in my office?"

Duo's eyes widened comically. "Oh shit! Heero!" He fumbled with his collar for a moment.

"Hey, sorry about that... No, it's just Wufei... Yah, popped out from under his desk! Call you back." Duo mumbled into his jacket.

Wufei laughed, eyes wide with comic disbelief.

"Maxwell, I know you're a bit eccentric, but I think naming your coat 'Heero' and talking to it at 5 a.m. is something altogether different! Just what is going on?"

Duo blushed and looked down at his feet, shoving his hands in his pockets. He chewed his lower lip and fidgeted sheepishly.

Wufei waited.

"Erm... That is..." Duo tried to explain.

Wufei blinked.

"Heero'sinBerlinforsixmonths," he managed to blurt out.

Wufei arched an eyebrow. "And?" he prompted.

Duo coughed. He didn't think he'd ever been so embarrassed. "I'm stuck here in Geneva!"

"At the risk of sounding repetitive, 'and?'" Wufei took a seat on the edge of his desk; this looked like it was going to take some time.

Duo rolled his eyes. He was just going to have to spell it out.

"Well, this is the first time Heero and I have been separated since we've been together. So, to kind of ease the loneliness, we set up this little ritual." Duo moved back to the window, gazing out with a faraway expression in his eyes. "Every morning at five, I come here and look towards Berlin and Heero looks out his southwest-facing window towards Geneva. Then one of us calls the other to say 'Good morning' and we can start the day together." Duo flipped his collar back to show Wufei the small mic clipped on it.

Now it was Wufei's turn to blush. He hadn't expected this, such a personal confession.

Duo continued; "It's not so bad then. Knowing that Heero is just over there, a little beyond the horizon, looking back at me." Duo touched the glass again. "He doesn't seem so far away."

"You can always call him, you know. We do have vid-phones and I'm pretty sure Yuy isn't on a contact-restricted mission," Wufei reasoned.

Duo turned and grinned at him. "Yah, but isn't it more romantic this way?"

Wufei rolled his eyes, and Duo scampered off, chortling.

"Hey, Heero, time to go home, ne? ... Are you looking out your window now? Can you see me waving? ... Of course I know you can't see me, Heero. You're so exasperating sometimes. I should have asked if you could see me stripping... Kidding, Heero! I'm just kidding! Sheesh. Anyway, I called to tell you some good news! Wufei switched offices with me! ... That's right! I'm reorganizing the furniture so I can face you all day now. ... Yah, I know! Wufei! And they say romance is dead. Hah! ... I love you too, Heero. Call you when I get home."
