Everyday

Both Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell lived in Preventers barracks, Heero in Block A, unit 5E and Duo in Block C, unit 7D. Every morning at 7:28 a.m. Duo would wave goodbye to his dog, Mr. Pudgles, grab his coat, and head out the door. Every morning at 7:40 a.m. Heero would pull on his white tube socks, check that the stove and lights were off, and head out the door. The two young men would meet at the front gate of the barracks compound, turn right, and walk to work together. As two of the Preventers best agents, they generally worked seven days a week.

On the way to work there was a small bakery. Every morning they would stop to pick up breakfast and coffee; Heero would order a bran muffin and Duo would order a sticky bun.

Every morning Duo forgot to pick up tissues.

But it was okay because Heero carried a little pack of damp towelettes in his bag.

When they got to work, they parted ways, Heero's office being on the tenth floor and Duo's office being on the third floor.

Everyday at noon, Duo would swing by the second floor cafeteria and buy lunch, a ham and swiss on multigrain for Heero and a pastrami on rye for himself. Heero would meet him at the fifth floor atrium with two bottles of juice. It was usually grapefruit juice. One time it was pomegranate, but that was weird.

Then they would go back to work.

Everyday at 4:30 p.m. Heero and Duo went to work out in the Preventers gym. They spent twenty minutes on cardio, and forty minutes on weights. Sometimes they went swimming. Usually they spent a little time in the sauna.

Dinner was often taken together, but just as often eaten separately. Heero frequently went out with Relena and Duo had Hilde and "the boys". Heero did not know who "the boys" were, but he did not feel inclined to find out. If he were honest with himself, he kind of wished "the boys" would just go away. This was because every night, Duo had to stop by Heero's to get him to let Duo back into his own apartment. For, while everyday Duo remembered to grab a coat before heading out the door, he never remembered to grab his cardkey. Heero had the stuff in his apartment to recode cardkeys.

And when Duo came back from a night out with "the boys" he was always a little drunk, always a little over-the-top, and never quite as much fun as he was the other ten hours a day that Heero spent with him.

Duo, on the other hand, just kind of hoped he wasn't bothering Heero and wished he'd remember his cardkey more often.

One night, Duo buzzed Heero from the lobby of Block A.

"You're back early," said Heero. "Do you need me to walk you home?"

Sometimes Duo was not very balanced.

Physically, not mentally.

Well. Both, really.

Sometimes.

On this night, however, Duo was quite clearheaded and standing firm on two feet, so he declined Heero's offer of an escort home.

"Okay. I'll have your cardkey ready by the time you knock on my door," Heero replied.

When Duo arrived at Heero's door, he found that he didn't have to knock because Heero was standing there in the hall.

"What's up?" asked Duo.

"I'm running a system defrag. I forgot, sorry," said Heero.

Duo shrugged.

Heero invited Duo in to sit for a bit while the computer did its thing.

They sat on the couch and watched tv, drinking beers and eating pretzels. Heero theoretically did not believe in junk food, but Duo knew where he kept his secret stash. Twenty minutes later and they were sprawled out on the floor surrounded by bags of chips, gummy worms, and little candy-coated chocolates. There were even carbonated beverages, which Duo had found wedged in the back of Heero's refrigerator.

At quarter to midnight, Heero noticed that Duo had gone to sleep, right where he lay on the floor. Heero sighed and trotted off to his room to grab a spare blanket and a pillow for Duo.

After tucking Duo in nice and snug, Heero decided to just sleep on the couch.

He liked sleeping when Duo was in the same room.

The next morning Duo awoke to the most heavenly aroma of baked goods. He was a little confused and a lot sore, but he figured that whatever was generating that warm, homey, sweet smell was worth it.

Heero had made muffins.

Heero had made blueberry muffins.

And they were good.

In fact, Heero made better muffins and infinitely better coffee than the bakery they visited everyday on the way to work.

Heero offered to make breakfast for Duo more often. Duo offered to help out if it meant they could make it everyday.

So then everyday at 7:00 a.m. Duo would wave goodbye to his dog, Mr. Pudgles, grab his coat, and head out the door. Everyday at 7:05 a.m. Heero would open the door, take Duo's coat, and usher him into the kitchen.

But then they started getting into work later and later.

Duo had only one solution.

Heero agreed.

Mr. Pudgles agreed too. Wholeheartedly, in fact.

Both Heero Yuy and Duo Maxwell lived in Preventers barracks, in Block B, unit 17B. Every morning at 6:00 a.m. Duo and Heero would wake up together, take a shower together, and make breakfast together. At 7:45 a.m. they both waved goodbye to Mr. Pudgles, Duo would grab his coat, Heero would grab his cardkey, both of them would pull on their socks and check that the stove and lights were off, and then they would head out the door together.

They stopped working seven days a week.
