Disclaimer: you know it, i know it, let's not make me cry by having to say it out loud, okay?
Timeline: set at the beginning of Endless Waltz, but I've taken some liberties with Duo's living arrangement and the pilots' knowledge of each other's personalities and character traits.
Someone at the Door
There will always be people who randomly show up at your door and ask you for stuff. It happens, I know. I hadn't ever really had a "door" before, being homeless and whatever, but even when I was a kid there'd always be someone kicking at your box when you were trying to eat or nap...or not die...and they'd ask you for stuff. I'd always thought it was a street thing, but to my surprise on that first night in my new apartment the buzzer rang right in the middle of dinner. It was a neighbour who'd needed to borrow an egg. I'd thought she was joking. In hindsight, I may have been a bit rude to her. Just a little bit.
And since that day, there'd been no end to the demands: neighbours, advertisers, girl scouts, school fundraisers, charities, strange archaic religions, census, newspapers, mail, deliveries to the wrong address, the lost, the needy... It was obscene.
I'd fought a war for these people; I helped save the planet. Right now, I just wanted to hole up in my brand new, super comfy, super cozy little home and forget about the outside world. I didn't want to eat cookies; I would donate to various charities on my own terms; I had my own religion; I had no desire to exist on the government roster; leave my mail in the box downstairs; and no, I did NOT know where Mrs. Flugalmugalschmergenheim had moved to.
I was about ready to pack it in and move back to my cardboard box on L2.
And then the buzzer rang.
"I need your help," he said.
For some reason I didn't shut the door in his face. He was different. Random, yes; asking me for something, yes; but different from the others. Possibly because, while I'd been doing my damned best trying to hide from the world, that fucking newspaper boy insisted that I needed to keep up with the news...
I knew about Relena.
And if there was nothing else I knew in this world, I knew Heero.
But...
"I'm not Quatre," I replied.
Heero shook his head.
"I don't need a strategist. I'm blowing my way in," he explained.
"I'm not Trowa," I countered.
"I need someone with a little more finesse," he clarified.
"I'm not you," I retorted.
He looked frustrated.
"It's for the sake of peace, honour, and justice--"
"I'm definitely not Wufei!" I exclaimed.
There was a moment of...something... It was almost palpable, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I wanted... to help him. But I didn't know how to step out of my box.
"Duo? Please..."
I guess... all he had to do was ask.
